Should I go back to work- after having surgery a week ago??

You really are the only one that can answer for your body and how demanding your job is. Did your Dr clear you for work? Can you go part time if you find that it is to early to return? Can you take leave without pay rather than burn up your vacation time?
I have other health issues, older than you and had an open RNY with a band, gallbladder and cysts removed. Thus, I would not have gone back to any job after a week.

Didn't you get any sick time off for the surgery? Using up your vacation days and trying to return to work that quickly is "iffy" at best. A few post ops might be able to pull that off, but most need some time to recover from surgery, learn to get in their fluids, deal with fatigue, deal with diarrhea or constipation, etc. Even if you have no complications, the first few weeks post op can be challenging for many patients. Let me answer this with a question, do you want to spend 2 more weeks of your life in a hospital 5 years from now, like I did, with 3 muscle adhesions, and a full sm bowel obstruction? Its not fun. And its one of the most painful experiences of my life. Let your body finish healing or you can cause some very real damage like I did. Personally, I'd like to know what employer is gling to allow an employee back to work after major surgery without clearance from a doctor, but I'm sure it probably happens, trust me on this, you dont want to end up on the floor at work in excruciating pain because you over did it, the only thing that will save you at that point is morphine or delauded.
Finish healing, you are still at a point where the stitches in your pouch could tear. Dont do it.

Hell noooooo. Your innards are still swollen. Also, in a few weeks you'll hit a point where you become severely lethargic and can barely concentrate, and this period lasts like a week to 2 weeks for many of us.
Only go back to work if it's absolutely necessary. In addtion, you need time to gradually introduce foods back into your life. Do yourself a favor...take time out for you! Everything, and everybody else can wait. My doctor mandates 6 weeks. I was out 7.

Thanks everyone for your answers .. I have to use my first 2 weeks of vacation and after that my pay is only covered at 60 percent which is horrible .. After really thinking about it my husband really wants me to stay home.. I wish I worked for a better company that gives better time off .. My coverage is horrible

Try not to worry about the job and pay cut during this time. It is for the best that you make your job about you right now and heal.

I am half the person I was in 2008.
I went back to work after 7 days. I was off Monday of the surgery through the next Monday and went back on Tuesday. It was difficult yes but it's all the time I had. My doc says 7-10 days and won't write a note for more than 3 weeks which wasn't enough for my short term disability to kick in so I went back after the time I had saved up. which was 7 days.
I can sympathize with you. I am pre op and really trying to work this out before hand. I have to use one week of pto paid time off( they lump vacation and sick time together) then I can use short term disability , which is 2/3 of my pay. I was really hoping to get back to work in 2 weeks but I think now I should plan for more like 3-6 weeks. I first didn't think about std just thought I would use pto but I don't even have enough. I live with my son and daughter in law so we share expenses and I will have help both physically and financially. I am hoping 66% of my pay will be enough for a month or so. I can supplement with my pto but I just don't have much and as I am writing this I am home sick because my darn heart is acting up (atrial fib) I have had it since 2004 but has historically been infrequent til 9 days ago. I have now had 3 episodes. 2 lasted 24 hr each still in this one Been over 12 hours. I might need my meds changed which requires hospitalization and cardiac monitoring sighhhh
