I've never been a big tomato juice girl, as I much more of a cranberry juice girl instead. However, I'm finding tomato juice quite delictable! Yum!

I'm with you-- love, love V8!  But I have to be careful with it because it gives me heartburn post-RnY!

I would be cautious about drining too many of these too often. These are high acidity juices and my surgeon has his patients avoid beverages or foods with high acid content for some weeks post op. High acid content can slow healing and may be the start of an ulcer. We had a guy in one of my support groups, who I'd call the "poster child" of RNY patients. He had excellent wt loss, ate the right foods, had no complications, etc. Then about 16 months post op, we failed to see him at a support group. Next month he related his issue. He just took a shower to get ready for the support group and he noted blood in his stool in the toilet. He called the surgeon and was told to go immediately to the ER.  There is was verified he had an ulcer, caught in time so they put him on Carafate (?) for 3-4 days in the hospital and told to take for 30 days or more when he got home.  He told us had had a big craving for citrus fruits in hot weather. He'd often eat 3-4 cold oranges during the day, have grapefruit juice for breakfast, and could go through 2 gallons of the raspeberry grapefruit Crystal Lite enhanced water to quench his thirst.  Doc saw no other issues, but said his only reason he could see for the ulcer was the high acidity content of his diet.  Dave

I'm taking Carafate and Pepcid per my doctor's orders. It's part of his protocol for post-op. When I had my barium scan, it was clear--no obstructions and no ulcers. And, tomato juice is on his list of clear liquids. Believe me, I won't be drinking gallons of it, but it's a nice change from the sweet Crystal Light and protein shakes.

Wow Dave! That guy had a serious citrus addiction...I do not think that an 8 oz serving of V8 or my favorite, Knudson Farms Organic Very Veggie is going to cause that much damage. I usually add my Unjury Unflavored Protein to my Veggie juice for a snack.

Just to be safe, you could always ask your doc!

It is not likely that acidic foods cause ulcers - acidic or spicy foods can cause a preexisting ulcer to flare up but are NOT the cause of the ulcer itself. They can be caused by bacteria (H. pylori) and medications. It is even believed that smoking plays into ulcer formation.
