Today's all-inclusive, non-particularly spiritual, often Atheist daily quote!
“You don’t have to be brave or a saint, a martyr, or even very smart to be an atheist. All you have to be able to say is “I don’t know."

I like this quote a lot. Incidentally, I feel that way a lot as a Christian. So see? We aren't so different after all.

See it's interesting because when I was in the "discernment phase" of deciding whether and what religion I wanted to practice I approached it almost in the way a paranormal investigator works (pun intended). I went into it assuming there was no God and looked for evidence to prove me wrong.
I think it's ESSENTIAL to question. And I have immense respect for people who do question and don't just take whatever belief system is handed to them. My oldest is going through confirmation training and I am constantly challenging her to not just take what the bible says blindly. Don't take what our pastor says blindly. WHAT does this mean to you? WHY would you/should you believe it?
My youngest by far is the best at this. She's decided on a set of "personal decency standards" (this is actually what she calls them) that she says she would believe in even if she were not a Christian (and at 10 she does identify herself as a Christian) but she can tell you WHY she believes these things and how they play out in her life. I like that.
If my kids decided they were atheists I could respect that. I may not like it, but I could respect it so long as it's a process of discernment and not a knee-jerk reaction.
But yes...always question. Always.

We confirm in 9th grade. Was your family Catholic? In our church (Lutheran) confirmation isn't thought of as the end all/be all faith decision but confirmation of a decision your parents, by and large, made for you when they had you baptized. I don't bill it to my daughter as the rest of ehr life either. You are 100% right. That's a LOT to put on such a young kid. To me, it's more her training to be able to be treated as a young adult in the church, to understand what the heck she's saying at church (the Lord's Prayer, Apostle's Creed, etc.). I don't want her blindly parroting stuff. I want her to understand and if she doesn't agree with what is contained then I HOPE I raised a little woman who'd speak up (I hope).
Cuz like your quote yesterday said...if she doesn't believe there's a lot better things she could be doing with her Sunday morning!
