Shake, shake, shake...

I'm curious as to what other sources of protein you used early out instead of shakes? I'm really burnt out on the sweetness, and unflavored works in a few things--not everything. I feel like I'm eating my way through lots of cheese, eggs and shakes, and little else. I've tried all sorts of things suggested on my plan, but I keep getting caught up with shakes.

I know it will be easier once I can eat more than 2-3oz. at a time, but just thinking I need (and want) to broaden my palate horizon. I'm meeting with my dietician on Tuesday, so I'm sure she'll have other suggestions, but I wanted real-life, down-in-the-trenches experiences. Thanks so much!

I went to Bariatric Choice and ordered a bunch of different high protein items to help me get through. For example I got some pancake mix that is high protein with some sugar free syrup that I'm hoping to make for breakfast tomorrow. I will eventually figure out what I like and find recipes to make them high protein, but browsing through the site helped me a lot.

I'm trying not to rely too much on cheese, so I've been making turkey meatballs and meatloaf, chicken salad, egg salad and tuna salad. All are very soft and stage appropriate right now, and its much easier to get in my protein with these than the shakes that I have a hard time finishing. I also have a recipe for protein mashed potatoes and I made some with mashed sweet potatoes too.

A word of caution. I purchased the pancakes and sf syrup from Bariatric Choice as well. Be careful with the syrup! It tasted wonderful, however about an hour or so after I ate I was in the bathroom for literally HOURs after. The sugar alcohols from the Malitol can have a laxative effect. Not sure if it's that way for everyone, but my experience was horrendous!

Thanks for the heads up.   I'll be sure to only use a very little bit, and fwiw I could use a little laxative effect these days.

Try tuna salad (just a little mayo is all it takes for two or three ounces of tuna); steamed shrimp w/Mrs Dash sundried tomatoes, basli & garlic; refried beans with salsa

There is a ton of stuff out there and you can add protein powder to a lot of stuff to get your levels up. Sprinkle it on things you are eating. I don't know how soon your NUT will let you have some of this stuff, I could have this stuff after 2 months. Everything but the meat was OK up to then. Get some cook books that have listings of what you can have early out. WLS for Dummies is good for that. I still use it all the time. By the way, I am 4 months out and still can only eat 2.5oz of solid food.

Try putting the protein powder with Greek yogurt.  I'm out of everything except unflavored, so that's what I've been using.  Vanilla works well, too.  This morning I added some Peach Mango Mio and some canned unsweetened apricot halves.
