My family decided to go out to eat tonight since we were all home, so we went to the Red Lobster. Why is it that when I give my order the server insists I get all the sides that come with the di****s happened more than once & at different restaurants. I tell them I can't eat all of that & they continue to argue with me. I'm like really people. I am paying you to bring me what I want, not what you want me to have. I feel like I have to shout out that I've had gastric bypass for them to freaken leave me alone. Also when I'm done they ask if I didn't like the food because there is so much of it still left on my plate. Its so flippin annoying.

It's human nature to a large degree. They're used to pretty much the same type of customer--give me the "works".  They're doing a job, and it's likely robotic to a certain degree.  Ask for a "to go box" to be brought with your meal. Put anything you don't want to eat in the box. If it takes 2 boxes, ask for two.  Good rule to follow in a restuarant.  DAVE

Try to be patient with others, the server is trained to insist on giving you all your food. The server probably has not encountered someone who doesn't want all the food that "comes with" an entre. when I'm asked 10 times are you sure you don't want "X, Y, And Z" I simply say "no thank you." even if I have to say no thanks 5 times. I get the weirdest look when the server takes drink orders and I don't want anything, not even water. It was the worst when I was on a cruise I literally was asked 100 times if I wanted something else and if I liked it.

At some places servers are instructed to push certain items. They get in trouble when they don't.

it's their job - comes with the territory of going out to eat. i've never had an issue getting a to go box at the beginning of the meal and packaging a bunch up for home. i don't feel the need to push myself onto others. i just do what i need to do. i had surgery, no one else.

If you've ever worked as a food server, you already know that it is one of the most difficult (and often thankless) jobs on the entire planet.

Sadly, servers too often have to provide service to folks who seem to share your same, "I am paying you to bring me what I want, not what you want me to have" arrogance.

Anyhow, what I tell my server when I don't want the side(s) is that "I don't like" whatever the side might be.  When I've said this, I've never one time had a server try and force it upon me.

Also, if a server accidentally serves a side you don't want, pu**** to the side or the middle of the table and just don't eat it.  Not hard...

I encountered the same thing when lunching with my coworkers last week.  The server asked me four times what I wanted to drink.  I kept saying, "Nothing, thank you."  I'm still getting used to not drinking during meals and didn't want the temptation.  Now I think it might be easier to just let them plop a glass of water in front of me!

I've seen a lot of posts like this and I guess I'm perplexed.  Our decision to have a life-altering surgery doesn't change the society we live in.  Restaurants are in the service industry and their job is to bring you food, lots of it... and drinks, and continuously refill them.  I think the onus falls on us to just not make a big deal about it.  We can order water, and sip if we want or leave it alone.  Order sides and then take them home in a to-go box and consider it getting a couple more meals for the same price.  I sorta think it would be like a diabetic getting mad at the server for offering sugary drinks or suggesting a menu item that is laden with sugar.  It is their job to serve us, and it is our job to not be offended if others don't know our medical/surgical past.  Why are we getting upset at people who have no idea what is going on?
