Liquids Question

I had my RNY Tuesday. I have had no problem getting my fluids in. But, here is my question:

Does broth give you anything of nutritional value? I enjoy sugar free flavored water over broth. So, I would rather have the water. When I read the label on the broth, I just don't see the benefit to the body other than sodium.

I hope this makes sense. Pain meds make me loopy lol.

I had my surgery as well on Tuesday.  I am drinking Powerade ZERO for keeping myself hydrated.  It is a lifesaver.  I am adding protein to it. I have been trying really hard.  I am not where I should be with the fluid amount but I am getting there.  I also don't see the point in putting things in my body that are going to take as much time and effort if it isn't going to do anything for me.  I did go get cottage cheese and tuna.  gonna try that on the pureed stage.  How are you feeling other wise?  I cannot take the pain meds.  They make me sooo sick.  So I am trying to just deal with it.  It isn't really that bad.  Its more uncomfortable than pain. We can go thru this together.  Best of luck to you.

Thanks Kay Kay! Yes, we can get through this together! Water was not going down super easy. It was not bothering me per se, but it just took me a long time to drink it. But, at the hospital, they switched me to juice (unsweetened apple or sugar free cranberry diluted 1/2 & 1/2 with water) it was a BREEZE! I was drinking EASILY 9 ounces an hour. I was more afraid of too many fluids than not enough. When I got home, I had diluted diet crangrape (VERY low sugar low extremely low cal) and the sugar free Hawaiin Punch "mix ins" that you add to water. So I diluted the juice 1/2 & 1/2 or added the SF powdered Hawaiin Punch to my water and YUM..... I stop counting when I hit 64 ounces. I drink more. I am simply NOT enjoying the broth, at all! So, if our body does not need anything that it supplies, I would just rather skip it.

I am feeling pretty good. I do have some pain. But it is basically all in 1 staple area. They repaired a hiatial hernia while they were in there. I have no clue if that has added to my pain level any.  As long as I am up and walking, I feel great. If I sit for a while and get up, it seems to hurt a lot more.than it would have had I remained standing. I have protein shakes that I liked pre-surgery, but they mix with milk. So, I had my hubby buy one of those whey protein shots and I diluted it with water. OMG YUK! It tastes like black licorice gone BAD. And, I never have liked black licorice! So, protein wise, I am not doinng that great.

I can't wait for the tuna/cottage cheese stage. That sounds so YUMMY! Actually, right now I would love to have a drinkable yogurt :) I never would have craved that pre-op!

I am here for you if you need me!

Best of luck to you!

SF popsicles are an option. I got a snowcone maker to help out my wife after she got out of the hostpital from hydration.  Victorio brand, about $38 shipped. Grind regular ice cubes into "snowy" ice into bowl, half way up. Add a SF Torani or other flavor you might like. Add more shaved ice, and top with a little more Torani.  Now you can eat your water--no sodium either. DAVE

Thanks Dave! I have some SF popsicles and I LOVE sno cones! My real question was is there anything in chicken (or any other flavor) broth that I need, nutrient wise? Because if not, I would rather not drink it at all.

It depends on the brand you find. I think it was actually chicken stock that has protein. I might have used that, I checked for the protein content that early out.

That's a great idea !  I've never heard that one before.  I'll soon be ordering a snow cone maker from Amazon.

No, you can live forever and never have broth again.  It is an option when you feel like you can't stand another sweet something.
