HI, I had my surgery 6 days ago.  I stayed two nights and came home. I was in OR for a little less than 2 hours.  I woke up pretty easy.  The last thing I remember was having my arm strapped and next thing I know I was being woke up.  The pain wasnt that bad except I had a drain tube in and it hurt to take a deep breath.  NO cathater.  It really isnt that bad for it being major surgery.  You will do fine.  Just remember to take it one day at a time.  Good luck..  Here if you need to talk.

While I haven't had surgery yet, I have heard on the boards to bring Biotene mouth spray and Chapstick.   The biotene will help until you have your leak test and keep your mouth hydrated as you won't have water or ice chips.

I remember being in the operating room and the anesthsiologist asked me if I wanted a warm blanket.  That was it.  I woke up recovery.  I had a catheter but no drain.  I was up walking a few hours after getting into a regular room.  There was some discomfort, but no unbearable pain.  I had no complications and spent 2 nights in hospital.

Hi,

I'm pre-op but my surgeon gave me all of the information in a 3 ring binder. Here's what his plan is:

You will be wheeled into the OR conscious. A team of at least a board certified anesthesiologist, a trained surgical assistant and nurses will assist your surgeon. A Registered Nurse (RN) is in charge of the OR.   Once you are in the OR, you may have to transfer yourself to the operating table (or they may do it for you). Once in position, you will be anesthetized and connected to monitoring devices. Once you are asleep, a small nasogastric (NG) tube will be placed into your stomach. It is also likely you will have a urinary catheter placed at this time (I will!). A gastroscope will be passed into the pouch to look for leaks at completion of surgery.   The operation will take 1 to 2 hours. Recovery can take 2 to 4 hours, depending on the patient. Most patients have very little memory about their stay in the recovery room. It is common for patients to be drowsy and sometimes confused when they first wake up. Most patients will come out of the OR with an abdominal drain and a urinary catheter in place. The urinary catheter will usually be removed on the first post-op day which means you will be expected to walk at least three times that day. The abdominal drain will be removed at discharge.   Hospital stay averages one to two days. Barring no unforeseen complications, I will have surgery Monday morning and stay overnight. I will be discharged Tuesday evening, after a dinner of full liquids. If I can keep dinner down, I will be released.   Recommended home pharmacy supplies:   Gauze Pads Thermometer Bandage Tape Bandages Cotton Balls Tylenol   Ok… I’m done typing. My surgery date is still TBD!   Good luck, girlie. You will do great!

It's so normal to have some fear of the unknown. Generally unless you have a history of problems with your kidneys I doubt you will wake up with a catheter. If you do, it's just uncomfortable and does not really hurt. Just a nuisance to move around with.

In general the hospital will do everything they can to make your pain manageable. I can't tell you there were be none. Some people can tolerate so much and just ignore it. Others scream at a pea under their bed clothes. Either way, if you have a problem let the staff know and you will get help.

The length of your surgery depends on your medical past and the skill of your surgeon. In general count on being on the table for no less than an hour. Unless you are a basket case like me you wont be under for more than two.

The doctor can if needed wake you up in the blink of an eye. You don't want to be woken up that way, don't ask me how I know. It does hurt. In general you will wake up and sleep many many times till the drugs wear off.

Most doctors will encourage you to get out of bed and walk with in a hour of being taken from recovery back to your regular room. It will be very uncomfortable, but you can do it! The more you walk at first the sooner you will start feeling better. They normally will not force you to get outta bed though. Trust me you will feel better if you try. Just go slow.

You will normally begin to feel like your old self in two weeks or less and you might start getting lots of energy in about 4.

Do you have a catheter?

Yes I did, but I didn't even feel it.

Was the pain unbearable?

I didn't have any pain at all. At least none that I remember.

How long was your surgery?

A couple of hours. I went in at 8, by noon I was in recovery.

How long after surgery did you walk?

Almost immediately. I think maybe an hour after I was fully awake.

Have a hard time waking up?

If I did I don't remember. My hubby was there and took pics when they brought me out, but I just remember waking up in my room feeling just fine.
