Carmen,
2 ounces of solid protein is the best I can do right now as well so I add a protein drink, yogurt and other protein foods to boost the protein.   I feel that my wt comes off slower than some post on OH but it is coming off.  It took me several weeks before I could get in the recommended protein.  It is true what others have posted about healing, the heart muscle, etc.   Do you think she meant 20 grams per meal instead of day?  Barb

Not everyone can get in over 60 grams per day initially. Your body will not become protein deficient early out if your protein numbers were good pre-op. I was only allowed 3 meals per day and eventually had to supplement with shakes until I could eat more.

YMMV ON THIS. You might want to ask about adding protei. Snacks like cottage cheese and yogurt to get more protein. I was exhausted when my needs increased and couldn't eat enough.

As others have said, you definitely need more protein, and if you cannot eat solid protein, supplement with protein shakes. I'm a week behind you, and I'm averaging between 65-90g protein a day between food and occasional protein shakes. I know you had a feeding tube, so maybe that's why she only recommended 2oz. meals? I'd definitely get in touch with her and get clarification. Good luck!

Have a question I have emailed my dietian a today but I am only 7 weeks out... Was told not to focus in peotein right now just do the 3 meals 1/4 cup each meal but I read allot people get 60-80 grams per day when I asked her about protein she said I only needed 20 for my frame .. I only get like 15-20 grams right now

I know every doctor is different but that's way off
Well, the ASMBS recommends 1.1 gram protein per kilogram ideal body weight, which works out to about half a gram per pound of your ideal weight.  So unless your ideal weight is only 40 lbs, your dietician is giving you dangerous advice.

Even people that haven't had WLS need more than 20 grams protein a day!  If this dietician is in your surgeon's office, I would let your surgeon know what she's saying.  And I would fire her and find yourself a registered dietician that is familiar with the ASMBS guidelines.

Why are you getting so little protein at seven weeks?

Is it possible she meant 20 g per meal since you are having 3 meals a day.  You could also supplement with protein shakes.

Did she mean 20 g/meal. I get anywhere between 80-100 per day depends on if I have a shake or not. The first three months were tough for me because i had a stricture and needed to be dialated three times plus ended up having IV fluids several times in those three months.  I am not 10 months out and doing fine.

I agree that she probably meant 20 grams of protein per meal. 2oz of meat/cheese is about 20g of protein. I'm sure it was just a communication error between the 2 of you! You can supplement that with a protein shake and you will be in great shape!

Two ounces of meat is not about 20 grams protein.  One ounce meat has about seven grams protein so two ounces is only about 14 grams.  To get 20 grams protein per meal, you'd have to eat more than two ounces.
