Protein amount required per day
This is what I received from my dietian
Hi Carmen,
It is good to hear that you are drinking lots of water and getting out and exercising. Focusing on healthy habits of good nutrition and daily exercise will enable you to continue to lose weight and sustain your weight loss for many years to come.
When it comes to protein needs following surgery, you may find it difficult to meet your needs in the first few months following surgery due to tolerance issues and smaller amounts of food. As time passes, your body's ability to tolerate higher quality proteins such as meats, poultry, fish and dairy will increase. Eating these types of food at every meal will allow you to meet your protein goals without increasing the amount of food you eat. Remember to focus on the 70/30 rule at every meal (breakfast you can focus mainly on protein). Due to the limited capacity of your gastric pouch it is a good idea to eat your protein foods first before the vegetables.
Your specific protein needs will range between 40-50 grams/day. If you are eating higher quality proteins at every meal, you should be able to meet those needs in the foods you eat in the coming weeks. I have attached a handout on protein needs that you might find helpful in trying to increase protein type foods into your diet.
If you are experiencing slow weight loss or a weight loss plateau, know that this is very common and happens to almost all patients at one time or another. Sometimes your body will plateau at a weight you maintained previously for a number of years. Don't panic, it will pass. Just adhere to the guidelines. Refer to your guidelines booklet for suggestions when experiencing slow weight loss or a plateau such as the 70/30 rule, measuring your foods, exercise to the point that you have perspiration on your brow, you are getting enough sleep (7-8 hours a night) etc.
