Sodium Level
The 2010 Dietary Guidelines recommend limiting sodium to less than 2,300 mg a day (which is about the same as a level teaspoon) -- or 1,500 mg if you're 51 or older, or if you have high blood pressure or other health problems.
I have a salt sensitivity and high blood pressure, so I limit to 1500 mg daily as much as I possibly can. It's easier than you might think when you can eat a big variety of fresh food, but it was easier for me before surgery than it is now, three weeks post op (on purees). I can't wait until I can eat fresh, whole foods all the time again.
Drinking more water also helps with water retention.
