I'd try a PT first for your back and also ask them about yoga. It's a great core builder and even when I had my worst back issues it always made it feel better.

Thanks for all the responses. I guess I should have included... I just relocated to CA from OH and I'm seeking work... so no insurance = no PT. I have a membership to Planet Fitness.... the closest location to me since the move is 25 miles away in Inglewood, CA .... Who wants to battle LA traffic?!?! I've been walking around the block the past couple days so at least it's something. Also, I used to have a membership to the YMCA and took the water aerobic classes... LOVED it! But without a job, we are living on my hubby's VA disability which isn't much and we are living with my in laws atm... so there is ALWAYS someone home. I have some of the Biggest Loser workout dvds maybe it's just time to put my big girl panties on and suck it up.... no more excuses!
