Who to listen to...PCP or NUT. Going crazy!

I'm getting frustrated. Enough to make my head hurt. First, a little background from this past week.

Ive been dealing with low blood sugar and low blood pressure. It's not terribly low, but my blood is usually 70-80. And my BP is usually 90/55.

But yesterday it got as low as 52. I got super dizzy. And worried. So, I called my doc.

So here's my dilemma:
My doc wants me to eat more carbs. As in bread or crackers. I explained to him I can't, but he says to me, "At this point your not desperately trying to lose weight. Your BMI is 28, you're healthy. There's no reason why you couldnt eat some bread. You need it to get your blood sugar up."

So, in my head, I can't eat bread. I just can't. I realize it's for my own good, cause of my low bs, but I can't. And honestly, I won't. I like how I look and feel and eating bread to me is like failing. It leads to the road to failure. I told him I was eating beans, they have carbs. But according to him, not enough. I told him that my nutritionist has told me to eat veggies because they have carbs. Again, he said not enough. I don't want to change how I'm eating. I hate change. At this point I really would like to try to get to goal first before I start changing things up.

Im just frustrated. I want to listen to my doctor, but I also want to listen to my nutritionist. She wants me to get to goal, my doc wants me to be healthy. What I don't think he gets, is that for me to stay healthy, I have to avoid the things that got me to 307 lbs in the first place. It's actually causing me a bit of anxiety to think I have to eat carbs. I don't know what to do...

I know you guys will understand.

I would always listen to your Dr. over a NUT...I mean after all you trusted him to operate on you..he knows whats best!

He's not my surgeon. He's my PCP. Hes actually learning about RNY with me cause he doesn't have very many patients that have had gastric bypass. I bring him info all the time about what we take and what we eat and how we can't have NSAIDs and what dumping is.

I agree.  Add some fruit.  Does your NUT know what is going on with your blood sugar and blood pressure?

Yes, she knows. We're still working through it. Trying to figure out what'll work for me.

Thanks. Yes fruit does raise my sugar, but I dump horribly, so I have to be very careful. I've been eating apples (like 1/4 of one) and for the most part I haven't gotten to sick from them. But bananas, grapes, oranges, strawberries... All make me dump. I can eat like an 1/8 of a banana before I start felling sick.

That's what's frustrating me. I have tried bread before, but I got sick. I threw up and like most of you know, throwing up with RNY is no fun. My doc wants me to eat rice too. Yeah, rice makes me sick too. So the stuff I could eat to raise my sugar is what makes me sick and it's the stuff my nutritionist doesn't want me eating.

BTW, my surgeon and my NUT work together to come up with the diet. She, my surgeon, customizes each individuals eating plan. I was told before my surgery that I'd be eating 1/4 of a cup for the rest of my life because of the size she was making my pouch. She asked me if I was sure I wanted to do this and if I was ready because it was a life long commitment of eating this way.

I was willing to do this and still am. I just needed to vent about how frustrated I've been this past week. I just have to find what works.

I am going through the same problems with my sugars... and I am only 3 months out. I am having the same struggles and my sugars dip into the 40's and 50's while I am working. Not a good thing. One thing my NUT recommended that has been a lifesaver is, of all things, peanut butter butter crackers. I keep a pack with me and when my sugars gets low, I eat 1 or 2 and it seems to help things stabilize. I don't feel great about eating them, but it is better than hitting the ground!

What good is being healthy through the surgery if you keep passing out. Is that healthy? I would try eating 1/4 slice of bread and see if that makes a difference in how you feel or in your blood pressure. Then you can work your way from there. The goal is to be healthy, not sick. It sounds like you are talking to your PCP and the NUT. Have you spoken to the surgeon about this?

you may want to see an endocronologist (which i'm quite sure i spelled that wrong!).  I was not diabetic, but my son has had some sugar issues.  I think the carbs he's talking about are the wrong ways to deal with low blood sugar issues.  it will cause spikes but that isn't what you want.  you want to work on making your BS stable.

it is a pity you can't do fruit, but i would try to encorporate as much fruit and veggies as you can.  maye a bit of sweet potato or pumpkin, etc to try and get some healthier carbs in.
