Update from the hospital after emergency surgery
Yesterday morning I started having an unusual pain in my stomach..I thought it was because I took my vitamins on an empty stomach so I went about my morning. I attended my thursday morning bible study and afterwards the pain had kept increasing. I got home around 1130 and made myself some egg whites and cheese since I hadn't eaten yet and figured this would help. After I ate the pain continued to increase to the point where I could hardly breathe and I couldn't stand up straight. I had my 2 toddlers at home so I got ahold of my husband at work and he came home at about 1. By 1:30 we were at a very small local hospital. I was given a ton of pain meds via IV that were not working and they continued to push fluids since I was also dehydrated. At 6pm they did a CT scan by 7 the ER doc was concerned and unsure of what action should be taken by CT scan showed an inflamed mesentery(spelling) area as well as some of my veins were blocked/clotted. The ER doc got on the phone with my RNY surgeon and my surgeon asked them to transfer me to the next closest hospital(santa barbara) 25 miles away. Once I got here the oncall surgeon reviewed my CT results and admitted me to stay over night saying that my RNY surgeon would be here in the morning (she was coming back from being out of town) to run tests and figure out what was going on. At 6AM my surgeon decided to go in and take a look to figure out exactly what was wrong and to fix it. I woke up in the recovery room after 2 hours and my surgeon told me I had developed a "peterson" hernia and my small intestine was twisted and stuck in the hole from the hernia. She stressed that I was very lucky that we went to the hospital and that the part of the small intestine that was stuck and twisted could have died.
I'm feeling pretty good right now...having some SF jello and my surgeon said I should be able to go home in a few hours. Long story short...don't wait to go to the ER if you are in urgent pain!!!
So thankful they figured out what was wrong before it was too late. Enjoy that jello!!

I'm so glad you got help when you did. For anyone who had laparoscopic surgery please be aware that this is a very real possibility and no severe pain should be ignored. If the hospital you go to doesn't know what's going on, be sure to mention you had laparoscopic surgery and have them rule out a Peterson hernia. It can't always be detected on a CT scan, sometimes, like Manda, they have to go in and see it.
