Beginning to think surgery didn't work

I thought the exact same thing and even asked the doc if he was sure it worked.  He assured me it did and after time I began to believe him. It took me a few weeks for me to start feeling full and feeling more restricted.  It happened once I was no longer having all liquid food.  I only lost 8 pounds between weeks 2-6 after surgery but after that it started coming off slowly but surely. Hang in there and give you insides time to heal and the internal swelling to go down.

Your brave eating meatloaf at 3 weeks!! I am 5 months out and just dared to eat meatloaf because of the carbs in it. As far as your weight loss I gained weight after surgery due to fluid retention but lost it slowly.I only lost 10 pounds at 3 weeks also. Sit down and read over your diet instructions and write everything down that you eat and exercise!!!!!! It will make you feel better!!

Your surgery worked.

However, you aren't using your tool properly.  If you go out and buy, say, a hammer and then try to use it like a screw driver, it's not gonna hammer any nails in.  That doesn't mean the hammer doesn't work.  You have to use it correctly if you want it to work.

You're not sticking to your meal plan.  You can eat two slices of meatloaf because the nerves that tell you when you're full haven't healed yet.  You could end up stretching your pouch if you continue to eat large amounts of food.  You need to measure your food and stick to your plan.

You can eat sweets because most people can.  About 30% get sick (dumping syndrome) if they eat things high in sugar.  That means 70% of RNY folks can easily eat sweets.  However, some of those choose not to and choose to stick to their meal plan instead, especially in the early days post op.

Your surgeon will not do a revision when you're only a month post op.  It is too soon to say that surgery failed.  Also, if you don't stick to your meal plan after RNY, what makes you think you would stick to it after a revision?

Are you working with a registered dietician?  What about a therapist?  Do you have a food addiction, and if so, are you getting treatment for that?

Hi:

I agree with Kelly on some of her advice. I am 3 months post op and for the first few weeks after my surgery I was very hungry and didn't understand why! I had read all these postings that said everyone couldn't eat if they tried. I felt like I had been cheated and what was wrong with me! I do believe, in hindsight, that my brain was allowing me to "think" I was hungry and then when I had to eat something, I was full very quickly. So sometimes its not always your stomach crying for food. Its your brain too! I also went to get some advice from a NUT and she said that I could eat some protein (even though at 2 weeks post op my surgeon did not recommend it). So, I ate some egg whites to help with the feeling and this helped immensely. Knowing what I know now and what I THOUGHT I knew post op is two completely different things. Ask a NUT to help you with your issue and just for the record, I can eat ANYTHING, but choose not to. This was a big step for me and one that allowed me to choose the right direction for me. Not everyone has dumping syndrome! I am one of the lucky ones, but also one of the ones that would be at risk for failure because of my body's easy going nature. So, knowing this has made me very aware of setting limits for myself. I am careful. I know my chances of failure are higher than others. As far as the weight loss that is none existant, just wait and time will show you otherwise! Good luck to you,

Jackie

You aren't drinking enough fluids...minimum of 64 oz a day.  This helps in your weight loss!

Also,  people confuse two different things: hunger when they're really thirsty and head hunger, not real hunger.  I'm 3 years out and can't eat two pieces of meatloaf at one sitting.  Remember, you just had surgery 4 weeks ago and are still in the healing process.  May I ask why you are tempting fate so early out?

I asked my surgeon how I would be able to tell the difference between head hunger and real hunger. His exact words cut me at the time, but saved my life so here they are, "Think of a food you hate. If you're truly hungry and someone offered you that food, you'd be greatful and say thank you because when you're truly hungry, anything will satisfy you. If you'd say no to that food, you're just being fat and you need to stop that behavior immediately or you'll always be fat!" Now, 175 pounds later, before I eat anything I ask myself if I'm truly hungry or if I'm just being fat.

Also, another brilliant woman on here said that you can stop following your plan and start cheating whenever you decide you're done being thin and healthy and you want to go back to being morbidly obese. No food is worth going back to 340 pounds and a size 34 in women's stretch pants! Especially when I can pick up any woman's size 6 and have them fit easily AND I'm still losing!!!

STICK TO YOUR PLAN!!! I promise you'll never regret it!!!

I was done three days after you.

were you given a "plan" to follow?

are you weighing or measuring your food? What led to you eating two pieces of meatloaf? Did you realise that the nerves to your stomach were cut and chances are you won't be able to "feel full" this early out- I can't but I also weigh and log everything before I eat it and I don't eat any more than that.

why are you cheating yourself by eating sweets? Do you see a psych or councillor to discuss your food issues- I do, best thing I've done for myself!!

did you research before you had your rny, I realise a lot of people don't and that's cool- each to their own but you seem slightly confused about what you were expecting from this and maybe as it was said before going through this board and reading up would help.

im really sorry your struggling the way you are and I feel maybe you haven't been given enough info at this point- I hope that you can move forward positively and land on your rny feet- good luck Hun
