VSG vs. Rny ?
Hello,
Yesterday I had my first consultation with my surgeon. He suggested that the sleeve would be best for me, since I was only borderline diabetic. I was leaning more toward the rny rather than the sleeve, simply because it offers more evidence of results than the newer method, the sleeve. Opinions ?
I see more RNY post ops than sleeve post ops in my support groups. My surgeon's nurse did make a comment the other night, when asked to compare the two surgeries. Since she handles the "S.O.S. calls" from newer post ops, she did comment she has observed a higher number of concerns from sleeve patients. She also commented that most concerns were over eating issues and constipation--more constipation issues issues than RNY patients over any time frame. GERD can often happen to sleeve patients too. I've also know of at least 2 sleeve patients in one support group who gained almost all of their wt back within 24 months of their sleeve surgery. Basically, it depends on compliance to protocol for any surgery to be successful. There is a much larger data base on RNY results vs sleeve surgeries, since the RNY has been done far longer than the sleeve. If I had the choice, I'd still have chosen my RNY, even if the sleeve would have been an option 6 years ago when I had surgery. DAVE
