feeling scared
I think the scareiest part of this is not knowing if what I am experiancing is normal or a cause for concern. I had my surgery on the 12th. I couldnt keep anything down for the first 2 days. Then I started being able to keep some water down. Well my surgeon cleared me to go home today. I feel awful! I am so dizzy, I feel so nauseous, and I have a massive headache. When I woke up at the hospital I had a small glass of water which I was able to get down ( it took me a while) then when he discharged me I took a glass for the ride and had a few sips. He relased me on the second stage which for me is full liquids. When I got home I had an 110z Atkins protien shake with 15g protien which was the first thing I had other than a tiny bit of chicken broth and water for 6 days ( I know I will need something with more protien but im waiting for all the different kinds in the mail) Well I wasnt able to drink it all but about half. That was at like 2:30. I havent been able to drink anything else even water, and when I try it comes up ( including some of the protien shake). I dont know if my stomach is just super swollen or if something is wrong. I just know I do not feel good and am getting worried on how Im going to get anything in me. Is it normal to have a hard time even with liquids the first few days? When I did my swallow test nothing went down. The next day when she checked still nothing had when down and the radiologist said she thought it might be an obstruction. My surgeon just thinks it was swollen because i was able to keep the water down. Im really nervous and scared and if this headache and dizzieness doesnt go away I am going to cry! should I keep trying to drink water tonight or just give it a break? any advice would help thanks
Call your surgeons' practice and ask to speak with the surgical resident on call. They will likely advise you to come in right away to the ER because minimally, you sound like you are dehydrated and need a bag or two of saline to get you back. The headache and dizziness are sure signs of it hun. Please call them ASAP, you can never be too careful.

Breathe sweetie. Try and calm down a bit. You making yourself SO upset isn't helping I'm sure. That being said though, I don't understand why your surgeon would release you if you're not able to get anything down and your swallow showed nothing going down. To me, that's cause for concern not just "Oh, you're swollen"...which you are, but by day 3 I was able to keep liquids down pretty good. If you feel in your heart that there's something not right...you're probably right. I would go in there and demand further scans or whatever. You're dehydrated and they shouldn't have sent you home that way. I hope everything works out soon.
It makes no sense to me that they would discharge you when nothing would go down. If nothing goes down, that's why it comes back up when you try to drink. You need to call your surgeon NOW. Or go to the ER. Dizziness, nausea, and headache are all symptoms of dehydration and if nothing has been staying down, then you are likely pretty dehydrated.
Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.
Thanks everyone I just talked to my surgeon and he told me not to try and drink anything else and to try again around 6am and i nothing is going down to come in to the ER emideately. I thought it was odd that they were releasing me as well considering I was telling them how dizzy I was. They unhooked me from the IV saturday morning and since then I havent been able to really get in any fluids. I will definately be going in in the morning regardless because I want them to do the swallow test again and make sure everything is going through. Im going to try and get some sleep if I can stop throwing up foam....Thanks everyone I will keep you updated
When I was in the hospital after surgery, I was not allowed to have any liquid until they took me to a room.Stood me up on a swivel table. Had me swallow some nasty stuff, put me in front of a machine and watched the liquid flow from my mouth to my pouch out to my intestines. After they confirmed that everything was flowing as it should and there were no leaks I could then have a small amount of water and after one more day, they let me go home. If you did not have a similar test, I think they were careless. Now maybe they did the test while you were asleep I understand they do sometimes, but if not they were very irresponsible in my opinion.
