I had my RNY on Wed 12th. First swallow test nothing went down and I stayed in the hospital until Sun 16th because I couldnt keep anything down. I got home on sunday had a protien shake and it came up and I threw up all night. Everyone on here advised me to call my surgeon I did and went to the ER the next morning Which was on Monday. Well I just got home today. My Surgeon did another swallow test and It all stayed in the pouch not a drop went through. I sat down for 15 minutes and when we checked again it had gone down. My surgeon said that the issue I was having was just really bad swelling and that becauce I had the band it made my stomach a little "tougher" like a callus. I was a little confused as to why they sent me home today considering I was throwing up at the hospital this morning but oh well. He told me to come home on stage 1 clear liquids because I seem to be doing ok on those but I really dont feel like I am. I know im not dehydrated because I was hooked up to the IV until I left today but I feel so nauseous! and I have such a horrible headache and my stomach is hurting. I have had nothing bu****er for since dec 12th they were giving me vitamins in my IV. He told me to stay on clear liquids until I see him on my appoinment on the 26th. I am on the verge of going into histarics! I am sick and scared. All I want to do is feel like myself again. The bariatric nurse said something about my stomach needing to just stretch a little. Will that happen by drinking as much water as I can? When I tried the protien shake at the hospital today that made me throw up my surgeon said maybe its just to heavy right now.....its been 10 days how much longer am I suppose to drink water. They did tell me to go buy some clear protien so I am doing that tomorrow

Concentrate on hydration.  Once you have that down you can think about protein.   You are an obese woman, you will NOT starve or get protein deficient,  but dehydration is a distinct possibility if you don't concentrate on that!

Good luck and take it easy for the next few days - I'm sure this is all making you very anxious but you WILL survive on just clear liquids at this point!

Water makes me very sick unless it is almost boiling, all I  can drink comfortably is tea or coffee. Your stomach will be swollen for a while but I'm confused as to why they sent you home myself. Did you ask them for some anti-nausea meds? They can give you suppositories so you wont throw it up. I hope it gets better for you. Hugz.

I too had swelling and couldn't keep anything down. That was about a day and half after my surgery. Once they did the ct scan and notice the swelling they I inserted a drain and it opened my pouch right up. I felt so much better. However almost 2 weeks later drain basically stopped doing its job and I had to have a second surgery. Basically he had to bypass the first bypass. But since then I have had no problems with food or liquids.

Good luck to you and I am sure everything will work out just fine.

Plain water is difficult for some people. If you are allowed hot no caffeine herbal tea, it might help. I found the warmth soothing and it was a nice break  from plain water.

I hope you're feeling better soon. Just keep sipping.

Maybe you should drink it an ounce at a time every 5-10 minutes..have you tried that? I completely agree with Kim as well..you just need to focus on staying hydrated at this point.

Or try sf popsicles or ice chips.  The fluid just trickles down your throat.  Your insides are swollen from surgery and it takes a while for this to go down.

Good luck
