Sodium question
Do I really need to worry about sodium? I feel like I am OCD about everything lately..I track EVERYTHING online and I've noticed that my sodium intake is pretty high..in the 3000 range. I eat mostly at home but I do use packaged foods, egg whites, cheeses, salsa(2 servings at least a day). I don't feel like I retain water. My blood pressure is low..it was always on the low end of normal before surgery and now its in the low range. My protein and fluids are really great (125g today on 1200 calories).
So bottom line..my question is..if I'm not retaining fluid, and I'm not having issues with my blood pressure do I really need to stress about the sodium?
Thanks in advanced!
Nope. If your level is elevated when you get blood work done (I would be surprised if it was), maybe decrease it a touch, but 3000 mg a day is not too bad, especially if your blood pressure is good with no fluid retention. We tell pt's with heart failure to limit to 2000 mg a day, so you are doing fine.
I would not. Post op RNY I have problem getting enough salt. With low BP - the higher sodium may keep your BP in more "normal" range...
