I just saw a short segment on the Today Show with Al Roker about his weight, RNY and obviously, his new book (I have it but haven't read it yet). A full interview will be on Dateline on Sunday night.

Personally, I am excited to see it!

He actually used the term 'tool' in reference to his surgery. All of what he said was so real to me. I don't have the regain to reference, but all of the other topic he touched on was spot on in my mind.

I got the audio version of his book. I like it that he is the narrator. I listened to the sample and I was happy to hear his voice. That makes the meaning of what he wrote more poignant IMHO.

I have been listening to the audible book.  His is an inspiring and wonderful story and he tells it all.  One episode that you will not forget is when Al Roker was a teenager and Bill Cosby made the first Fat Albert special.  Al was devastated.  He was a fat black boy and his name was Albert.  He was so afraid to go to school the next Monday.

On Monday, in the cafeteria, nothing happened and he was relieved, then suddenly someone yelled, "Hey, hey, hey".   He was embarrassed and humiliated for a long time after that.  Al goes into the pain of overweight, his struggles with diets and programs, his divorces, family life, promise to his father to lose the weight, his struggles before, during and after surgery.

Al carries a scale with him everywhere.  When he travels, the scale goes into his luggage.  He weighs twice a day, morning and evening.  He refuses to just ignore his weight.  He has had setbacks, regains, successes and failures.  He talks about them all in candid and inspiring terms. He has made the surgery a success, but knows how easy it would be to just let the weight come back.  He follows a diet and exercise program to stay at his goal.  A wonderful read for anyone, whether weight challenged or not.

I am going to look for that book too.I read a little bit about it on the internet, sounds very motivational. I am glad that someone in the public eye such as Al is a positive role model for WLS.

Oh I will have to see if his book is available for my kindle, I would love to read it!

It will hurt. It will take time. It will require dedication. It will require willpower. It requires sacrifice. There will be temptation. But, I promise you, when you reach your goal, it's WORTH IT! (Author Unknown). I feel this sums up my ongoing journey to a healthier me!
