Rough Night

Went out to dinner with family and friends tonight to an all you can eat buffet. I didn't eat a lot and I didn't eat anything I haven't eaten safely before. But I developed THE most intense gas bloating and pain afterward then I started to dry heave. It went on for nearly five hours! It took two doses of gas-x before it started to ease. I didn't have anything to take for the lingering nausea so I ate a few saltines and now even that has faded away. All I'm left with is a faint "sour" feeling in my tummy. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Is this some weird sort of dumping I should know about?

Even if you have eaten certain foods safely before, I still wouldnt trust it from a buffet. A lot of the food is prepared in fatty oils, have hidden sugar, and have additives like MSG. My thought is, if you dont prepare it yourself, you cannot be sure what and how much you are eating. At least at a restaurant where you order your food you can request things to control it, and see nutritional information. A buffet...mass food intended for mass consumption....I dont need to say more.

Thank you. I guess I'm guilty of becoming over-confident this far out. I had forgotten that change is the name of the game after surgery!

When we go to a buffet like Chinese etc....I order from the menu...usually shrimp or chicken without sauces or seasoning and some veggie like springbeans. They look at me really strangely but idc, I am paying for it so they can serve me what I want. The biggest thing for me to get passed was ordering my food special. I didnt want to put people out or make my guests wait for my food. I got over that really quickly because I feel that we deserve to be happy and have fun too, we just have to be more health conscious than they do. I hope your next outing is more enjoyable for you.

That's a good idea, thank you. The only problem is this particular buffet doesn't have a menu. Just the buffet. They do have a wide range of foods, though, fixed in many different ways. I had baked chicken (dark meat) and a small side of "real" mashed potatoes with a small amount of white gravy, a roll, and a small amount of sugar-free banana pudding. I had eaten all of it before with no problems so I thought I was safe. I thought about the hot veggies but they were all swimming in fat so I passed on them. I don't do too well with raw veggies, such as found in salads, so I passed on them as well. Hopefully the day will come when I can safely eat a green side salad.

Years ago, when we were in the restaurant business, one of our food purveyors told us that many of the buffet restaurants sprinkle yeast over most all of their foods. Why?  Because yeast, when ingested, makes you fill full as it expands in your stomach so people eat less at the buffet line.

It also promotes gas and bloating...

Now, I don't know whether or not this is true, whether buffet places actually do this or not, but I will tell you that in my experiences, 9 times out of 10 when I've eaten at a buffet, I do find that I feel uncomfortably bloated and gassy afterwards, which is why I seldom will eat at a buffet.

That sounds very plausible to me. If not sugar and salt, why not yeast as well? I don't plan on going back. I'm in no hurry to repeat my experience!

Thanks for your input!

You are suffering from 'grouchy pouch'   When this happens to me, usually after a food that doesn't agree with me, I ease up on my eating the rest of the day (and sometimes into the next if I'm still feeling uncomfortable) and I'll do mostly slider foods (yogurts, soups, mushies, etc.) to give my pouch a rest.

It's all part of the learning process--trial and error is the only way we can know what foods do and do not agree with our new tummy.

Yes, a very grouchy pouch...and a real wake up call. I've not been doing very well with my program and I guess I was primed for just such an occurrence. I've worked on taking it easy on it today. Ate some things I shouldn't have which are not on the program (crackers) but which go easy on my tummy. But I was proactive in that I also paid a visit to the grocery store and stocked up on the things I'm supposed to be eating, and I've told everyone NOT to invite me to go back to the buffet!

Thank you for your help!
