Surprised by dr's reaction to stomach pains
I have been having stomach pains and bloating since Thursday of last week. Sometimes it hurts pretty bad. I called my surgeons office on Friday. The nurse recommended gasx and miralax. Tried that this weekend. No help. Yesterday the pain come back and I decided to go to the minor med (to bad it was so packed I was never seen) On the way I called my surgeon. She asked where the pain was....I told her my lower abdomen. She said that it most likely has nothing to due with your surgery then so go to your regular doctor. I was kinda surprised by that. I thought she would want to see me.
Your surgeon is just that - a surgeon - she performs surgery ... She really is probably only interested if you are in the ER and someone ELSE has determined that you have something wrong with your pouch or intestines.
Having said that, some people here have surgeons who spend so much time with them, I don't know how they fit surgery in LOL!!!!
Having worked in hospitals for many years, I can say that most surgeons go into surgery for a) the money b) the kudos of being a surgeon and c) because they really mainly deal with people who are unconscious!!!! If they wanted to be diagnosticians or deal with people who are awake, they would have chosen to be a physician or PCP ...
I hope you can get your problem sorted out and I hope it is nothing to do with your RNY and is just something diet or digestion related that can be resolved easily.
ETA; Surgeons have pre and post op programs because they are a good money maker - NOT because they like us all so much they want to keep in touch!!!

You are so right. I think my surgeon would be thrilled to never see me again. I don't take it personally. He has done surgery on me 5 times and hopefully won't need to again. Other then my yearly follow up, which is usually with his NP, he is happy to leave my routine care to my PCP.

Did you think your surgeon would want to see you because you thought the pain was related to your surgery? Or did you think she's want to see you even if it wasn't related to your surgery? It makes sense to me that a surgeon would want you to see your primary care physician about things that she believes are not surgery related.
Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.
