Gluten Free diet
Thanks everyone! He suggested it mainly because even before my gastric bypass I've had a lot of intestinal issues & he thinks that if I go gluten free it might relieve me of some of the problems I have. I have had more than my fair share of medical issues since I was a child. It was just a suggestion on his part to possibly try & see if it helps. I'm willing to try anything but just wanted to do some research before hand & get other peoples experiences before I jump in.
Tinkyada brown rice pasta, Bob's Red Mill mixes for almost anything (pizza crust, bread, cake, etc) Pamelas also makes good mixes. Amy's has some frozen meals that are decent, and soups too.
Husband really likes Udi's breads, but they are very dense and dry. Chex cereals make several varieties that are GF, and Kelloggs makes a GF Rice Krispies, and now I think Fruity Pebbles and Cocoa Pebbles are too. Not that a lot if this is WLS friendly... just to show you there are a LOT of "mainstream" GF products available in most grocery stores and even discount stores like Walmart.
I've been gluten free since my revision 2 1/2 years ago. I rarely have any intestinal problems other then constipation. After my first WLS I lived with constant intestinal issues so I decided to give gluten free a try and I haven't been sorry. I also believe that wheat is a trigger food for me, both physically and mentally. There is a good book called "Wheat Belly" that explains how I feel.
Going gluten free is much easier these days because of the way food is labeled. Almost all foods will list if there is wheat in the ingredients. Also, most restaurants have gluten free menus. I credit being sugar free and gluten free with my relative ease with following a healthy post op diet and helping me maintain about a 135 lb weight loss for close to 2 years now.
I just advise people that if they think they have an issue with wheat or gluten to give it a try for 30 days and see if you don't feel better and lose weight. If not you can always go back to it. It is everywhere.
