Has surgery effected my immune system?

I am sure the answer is no, but it sure seems like I have been sick with colds, sinus infections, and any other bug that seems to go around. Before surgery I would get a cold maybe once a year, but I think I have been sick 3-4 times in the 9 months since surgery. Just annoying because I don't like to be sick, I think I have used 4 boxes of kleenex in the last 2 days...oh my poor nose!!

It will hurt. It will take time. It will require dedication. It will require willpower. It requires sacrifice. There will be temptation. But, I promise you, when you reach your goal, it's WORTH IT! (Author Unknown). I feel this sums up my ongoing journey to a healthier me!

Do you have any vitamin deficiencies since surgery?  Low vitamin D (below 80) can impair the immune. Low iron does, too.

My vitamin levels have been great since surgery, my surgeon's office always say that the levels of my vitamins make me a model patient because some patients have problems with their vitamin levels, but mine have always been where they are supposed to be. I don't go back to the surgeon until my 1 year in May, so my levels won't be checked until 2 weeks before then. But I will ask my PCP today when I see him at 1:30.

I'm totally opposite.  I've hardly ever been sick since WLS.  I use to deal with severe sinus infections and bronchitis several times a year (between season changes, so probably allergy related) and I have only had 2 years that I dealt with it since surgery.

I am the complete opposite!!! I have not even had a cold this winter (knocking on wood). The stomach flu has been going around work like wild fire for the past 2 weeks and I'm very lucky not to have gotten it.

Yea it is weird to me because I used to have minor allergy issues but normally never bad enough to keep me home from work. For the most part I feel great since surgery, but it seems when any little bug goes around I seem to get it now. I will definitely ask today about my vitamin levels to see if the PCP wants to check them.

I have been very fortunate I have not gotten sick since my surgery. My whole family has had really bad cold/flu bugs and I have not gotten it from any of them. I'm sorry you are not feeling well.

You know, I've been a lot sicker since I had my surgery too.  It seems like I catch every cold or bug that comes my way.  I don't know why, I've been taking my vitamins pretty faithfully and don't have any deficiencies.

Are you sure you don't have any deficiencies?  What's your vitamin D level?  Doctors often tell people their D is OK if it's pretty low, but research shows it really needs to be at least 80.

I don't know what my levels are off the top of my head (I have them at home in my paperwork), but when my surgeon did them in November, they were fine.  I'll look at the number again tonight.
