I posted on here last thursday about pain I was having in my right side and friday morning my surgeon set me up for an ultra sound. They called me this morning and said I had gallstones and my gallbladder needed to be removed next week. How is recovery?

It's different for everybody.  My gall bladder surgery was incredibly easy.  It was outpatient surgery and I felt pretty good by the time I got home (which was a three hour drive from the hospital).  I had a little gas pain late that night (it was laproscopic surgery) and took one dose of pain meds, but felt fine by the next day.

I am curious if your surgeon ordered an ultrasound of your abdomen prior to your RNY? I have been required to have one so that in case I have any stones forming they can go ahead and remove the gallbladder at the same time. I'm sort of hoping they find something I think. I don't want to face another surgery just after this one, not even a year really.

I see that this is only a couple of months for you. My surgeon said it is like 30% likely that WLS folks will get gall stones and it has something to do with the change in diet. There have supposedly been reports about other diets even causing gall stones. Well, the diet doesn't really cause it, it is the change in your diet that does if that makes sense. I don't understand it all myself.

I'm sorry I don't know anything about the recovery of this to give you any information on that, but I do hope the best for your quick recovery.

It's the very rapid weight loss.  It causes an imbalance of bile salts to cholesterol, which causes gall stones to form.  There is a medication called Actigall that significantly reduces the likelihood of gall stones after WLS, from 32% that get stones without the med to only 2% getting them with the med.  It's usually taken for the first six months post op.

I had some pain, but it was manageable. I needed a week off work because it was hard to sit up straight all day, and the pain meds made me sleepy. Week two I was sore, but fine to go to work.

My gallbladder surgeon did say mine was very inflamed and that is probably why I had pain for a couple of weeks after I had it out. All in all, not anywhere near the worst procedure or pain I've ever had.

Good luck and let us know when they get you scheduled.

I had mine out 5 years after WLS.  Honestly my recovery for the gallbladder removal was harder than gastric bypass.  I took 4 days off of work but it took about 3 1/2 weeks before I didn't feel any discomfort.

It's not uncommon after quick weight loss for the gallbladder to go bad even with programs like Weigh****chers if someone loses lots of weight quickly it can happen.

You will feel much better once it's gone.  I will say my bathroom habits changed a lot after.  I had lots of constipation issues prior now I'm much more regular.  Higher fat foods may make you rush to the bathroom quickly so be careful.

I had my surgery on Tursday and I was back to work on Monday. I was tired and it took me 2-3 weeks to feel normal again, but it was manageable. My sister had to have an open surgery and she was out for 6 weeks.. So it depends on a person and their body.

Two years ago I was on the New You weight loss program. After I lost 50 pounds my gall bladder went bad so I had to have surgery. I developed a fever after surgery and had to stay in the hospital for 2 extra days. After that I was fine. I was sore for a while, but felt much better after the surgery. It was well worth it to have it out.

I started to notice my gallbladder problems when I was pregnant. I got tested a couple months after my son was born, and had it removed when he was 6 months old. It was a breeze to me... but then I had only the recent natural vaginal delivery to compare it to... and I had NO pain relief for delivery.
Compared to the RNY I felt better sooner with the gallbladder. Gallbladder was done as an out patient, so I got to sleep in my own bed that night.
