Irritability due to hypoglycemia?
I saw my regular doctor this morning (not my surgeon). I told her I had increased irritability. She said it is probably caused by hypoglycemia. Has anyone else been told this? What did/do you do? I certainly do not want to start testing my sugars to verify. I try to eat on schedule but I often don't eat until 11am or later (except for coffee).
Curious on anyone's experience. Thanks.
I've never heard that nor have I experienced it and I have hypoglycemia. It's funny because before I got it under control I could go until noon (or after) without eating without a blood sugar drop, but after I started eating is when the problems started. I have true reactive hypoglycemia. Testing your blood sugar isn't that big of a deal. If it is what is causing your irritability, it would be a small price to pay to find out. Besides, having low blood sugar isn't good for your brain or the rest of your body.

Your regular doctor might not be aware of some of the side effects of WLS. How far out from surgery are you? Although hypoglycemia is somewhat common after 2 or more years out, What you are experiencing is more that likely hormonal. That is a very very common thing that happens to almost everyone right after surgery. The fat stores hormones and when you experience rapid weight loss it releases those extra hormones into your system and it can wreak havoc on your emotions. It can even cause you to start your monthly sooner or sporadically. I was gong through the change and had not had a period in 5 months and I started the next morning after surgery. I was very emotional and moody too. I am 8 weeks out now and feeling somewhat normal. Hope it gets better for you.
I have heard that moods can be affected by blood sugar levels, mostly because of the hormones that go nuts when we get hypoglycemic. It's worth testing your sugar every now and then to check it out. A little pin ***** isn't so bad and it's worth it to make sure that you're feeling your best!
I'm on an 18/6 split training for strength training--yes, my doctors are all aware, so I don't eat from 10:30 pm until at least 4:30 pm the following day. Then I have a small dinner and snacks throughout the evening. My blood sugar stays much more even than it ever did prior to starting this and I have noticed that it has brought down the intensity of some of my highs and lows (I have bipolar II). So maybe there is a real correlation between irritability/hypoglycemia?
You may just have to experiment with tweaking your eating schedule. For some people, something small every few hours is how they need to eat and for others, longer fasts in between eating periods are more beneficial.

Low BS may cause cortisone - release - and that would cause more of irritated state for some people. "cranky when hungry" comes to mind...
