Is Something Wrong?

I had my surgery on Feb 11th and I am feeling quite normal now.

I read about all the stories of people not being able to get down the water and the protein, but I haven't had a problem. In fact, I can drink 4- 6 oz of water in a couple of gulps and I hardly feel any full sensation. Protein shakes have been about 8-10 oz (with the powder added) and they go down no problem.

Did I ruin my pouch and stretch it out too much already? Is my stoma between the pouch and the small intestine the size of a freight train tunnel?

I'm not complaining because I'm in no pain and dont have any other problems, I'm just worried that I may have done something wrong......

Stretching out your pouch is actually difficult to do. The surgeons use the upper portion of the stomach to make the pouch. This portion of the stomach is difficult to stretch. Since the nerves were severed during surgery, a lot of people don't feel the full sensation.
I was able to (and still do) gulp down liquids without any problem. And yes (gasp) i even use a straw.
The pouch is like a funnel...liquids just run through.
Sounds to me like you're doing great!!!

Thanks! I hear all these horror stories so I'm happy to hear that this is all ok. I had th thought about the severed nerves playing a part in this.

We really only hear from the people who have, or think they are having problems.   Most of us sail through this just like you are.   I have been on OH nearly 9 years and think I have only started 2 threads in that time both of which were probably Off Topic - I just don't have anything to say because I didn't find any of this difficult!!!!

I do think that the reason some people have problems is that some if it is expectation (we just had major surgery of course it hurts!) and some of it is that some people are more needy than others too.   I am by nature a very independent person and have never really relied on anyone since I was a child   For example,  I take charge of almost all of my basic medical needs and basically just use doctors to get what I want done and in case of emergency LOL!   I have no expectation that anyone else will be responsible for me - I do have a health degree but really research the heck out of everything so I know exactly what I'm doing.

I actually find I find support by giving it rather than taking it - weird, I know, but maybe you could consider this when you get further out?   It will help others who feel like you in the future!

Who would think you would have to start a thread because you are NOT having problems???????

Doesn't sound like anything's wrong.  Sounds like you're lucky and having no problems or complications.

It would be impossible to have stretched your pouch already.  To do that, you'd have to be eating very large amounts of solid food on a regular basis, and you haven't had enough time to do that, even if you were trying to eat very big portions.

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR.  If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor.  Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me.  If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her.    Check out my blog.

I was just like you Liquids have never caused a problem I can drink 16.9 oz in 5-10 mins if I want to. Dense proteins are an entirely different story!! Not sure if you are at food yet but post back what a dense protein makes you feel like after a couple of bites you'll see the difference!

I worry just like you too. I'm 9 days out and doing really well with liquids and I have been keeping to my 1.5-2ozs. of pureed without problems. I hope it stays this way for you. You are very lucky.  Hope you see wonderful drops on the scale!
