Gallbladder removed, hernia, kink in small intestines

I went in yesterday to have my gallbladder removed. I will be three months post op on march 12th. I had serious pain in my right side and my surgeon ordered an ultra sound. Turns out I had some gallstones and my gallbladder was very inflamed. I was told I would be in surgery for 30 minutes to an hour and have 2 or 3 incesions. Well I woke up in some serious freakin pain!!! Turns out I had a hernia that he had to repair and also a kink in my small intestines. He said he pinned it so it wouldnt happen again. Im not sure what that means i didnt speak to my surgeon after the surgery that is just what he told my fiance. My surgery ended up being over two hours and I ended up with 7 incesions. I had a rough night in the hospital. I was told it was my choice if I wanted to stay over night. I had the lap band, had it removed, and revised to RNY. They were all seperate surgeries. This is by far the most painful! My nurse was awful! I was her last patient before and he vacation started after I got dischared. Needless to say she was trying to run me out of there all night long! She didnt want to give me medicine in my IV because in order to be released I had to be able to tolerate pain meds by mouth. So she kept trying to force them on me. I wanted the freakin good stuff!! I was in so much pain. I also had to be able to pee and my bladder has a hard time waking up. Even after I told her I was going to stay the night she came in my room at 3am and told me she wanted me to get up and walk to get my bladder going so she could discharge me. Finally I peed and just wanted to go home because of how rude she was being. I left the hospital at 4am how crazy is that? Also she barely looked at my stomach and told me I had 5 incesions. I come home and there is blood on my pants where the incesion by my belly button had been bleeding all night. She told me I had 5 when I actually have 7. Anyways I just had to vent about that. My stomach is so sore and it is hard to walk or do anything! Is this because of the hernia reapair? what is a hernia? what does it mean that he pinned my small intestines to keep them from kinking again? Also the insesion by my belly button is bleeding a little what should I do? Im feeling pretty awful :(

1 call the Dr about the bleeding.

2- a hernia is when the muscles in your stomach have an opening (hole) and your intestines can possible pop thru them.  It can become serious if they do pop thru them. There might be more types of hernia's but this is what my husband had.

3- the kink. it was probably sewn to attach it to the inside wall of your abdomen so it couldn't twist any more & prevent kinks. (my son had this done to his testicle when he was little)

4- Personally I would contact an attorney about a possible malpractice case. If you don't want to go that route I would contact the hospital & tell them how you were treated.

Very interesting perspective - where is the malpractice in what Amber said?   Rude nurses are a PITA but grounds for a lawsuit?  To sue for malpractice requires you to prove gross indifference, malice or bad/dangerous practice.

As a midwife who had her own practice (and therefore was legally liable for her actions), it irks me that people are so sue happy - from her story, there was nothing grossly wrong in Amber's care - just a crappy nurse!

Amber, glad you got everything sorted out and I hope you are soon back on the mend ...

I am so sorry that you went threw this. I hope you heal quickly. Your stomach is hurting because of the gas and all the work they did on it. If the wound has just a little blood it should be ok but if you are concerned call or go to the hospital and have them check you out. Did she at least give you pain meds to see you threw the night until the pharmacy opened? I think you should turn the nurse into the hospital for the way she treated you. That's not right that she pushed you out the door in the middle of the night like that. I know she wanted to get her vacation started but if it was that important for her to leave early she could have turned you over to a different nurse to take care of.

A hernia is a weakness in the muscles of your stomach and has either fat or intestines coming thru. They repair it by putting a patch on the inside of the lining of your muscles and sewing it in place. This keeps everything inside that is suppose to be kept in. I was really sore after my hernia repair, I slept in a recliner for a week cause it hurt so bad to lay down. Walking helps but don't over due it. Don't lift anything over 5 lbs either till your dr clears you.

I had 2 c-sections, RNY with Hiatial hernia repair and gallbladder removal. My gallbladder removal was the worst pain by far. With my Rny I was discharged the next day and walking up and down my road that day. With my gallbladder I was inpatient for 3 nights and the wanted to keep me longer. It was very painful for me. Hope you start feeling better soon.
