Well, I haven't given it up completely.  I eat it, just in small amounts.  I also eat no sugar added treats sometimes.  And I find that the more protein I get, and the less sugar I eat, the less I crave sugar.

Hope you are lucky....the sugar gives you up.... in some people sugar makes you feel sick and in others it just isn't an issue any longer.  Be sure your Doctor and Dietician go over this thoroughly with you AHEAD of the surgery.  After this surgery, if you go back to your old way of eating sugar and sweets, your weight will come right back.  You have a stomach the size of an egg...so believe me you want to fill it with the right foods that keeps you well and strong.  For me I had no cravings at first...then I ate something sweet at a Birthday Party and it went down just fine...but I didn't lose any weight.   Now I lose about 3 lbs a week without all the sweets.

Good luck to you

I've recently had surgery so I am probably not much help. But I did give up my beloved Cokes (real-not diet) a month before surgery.  It was easier than I thought, surprisingly.  I am having a bit of a hard time with artificial sweeteners. I use a little splenda in my coffee but it is still not the same as real sugar.  So I do think that sugar will be hard for me to give up in my coffee.

To be honest, the two week diet prior to surgery really helped me and once I hit the surgery my cravings were gone.  Now, every now and then I have a little something but not like I did pre-surgery.  I used to have a skor bar everyday at 3pm with a diet coke.  I've had neither in over 8 months now and could care less.

I have found other things that are way healthier and better for me to satisfy any "sweet" cravings i have.  I crave apples the most lately, which is really wierd.  And I eat them.  I think more than 50% of my problem prior to surgery was my affinity for sweets.  Now that I've kicked them out to the curb, and now at a loss of 92lbs I can say I feel so much better for it.

Not to mention, diabetes will not be knocking at my door any longer!  Yay me!!!

It gets easier - I did have a piece of carrot cake the other day, but a very small piece and I savored every bite.  It's really all about moderation, very sparingly, not daily or even weekly but maybe once a month if that.

Easy for me to do now since I am fitting into some cool clothes nowadays.  Best motivation ever!

My biggest change was I stopped using processed sugar substitutes and started using Stevia. I'm finding I use about half the amount I was using and it tastes so much better. I also LOVE Dove sugar free dark candies - just a bite every week or so does the trick for me!

Do you have to do a pre-op liquid diet? That's the time to do it. You'll be totally focused on changing your diet then anyway.

Sugar free jello, popsicles, Crystal-Lite, etc. will at least give you sweetness, even if it's without sugar.

I eat a sugar free ice cream bar most days. Because life without chocolate is not worth living.

I don't have to do a pre-op diet because I have lost more than 10 % of my weight during the time of going through the whole wls hoop jumping process. I had to do 6 months supervised dieting. I had given up alot of stuff like carbonated drinks. Even though i knew I had a sugar issue before, when the holidays came i totally went into overload on sugar. I was mixing the sugar with a bunch of stuff. Example, I would melt cream cheese (the whole block) and put a load of sugar in it. I know, that is sad:( . It is the hardest thing I have had to shake. I have been doing good for the last 2 days. Every time I have been having craving for the last 2 days, I have been avoiding the kitchen and trying to make myself busy. It has been working so far. See this is why I like OH!! I can be honest without the judgment. I would never be able to talk to anyone else like this. Maybe it is because of the whole no one knows me personally on here.

Don't miss it like I thought I would! Skinny cow makes some good sweets if you have a major craving. I usually just eat one bite of whatever sweet and that is seriously enough.
