Was admitted to hospital.. discharged yesterday! ULCER!
I went to the ER after horrible pain continuing to get worse while i drank anything. I was given mylanta and lidocain plus some fluids in the ER.. blood work they said looked pretty good. They called the other surgeon in the office which gave me the option of admitting me for fluids at least since i was so symptomatic of dehydration. I got 3 bags of fluids, several antacids including protonix and also percoset for pain and zofran for nausea. Surgeon came in to talk to me and is pretty positive i have an ulcer all though it hasn't been confirmed yet through endoscopy waiting for an appt for that to confirm. I am on carafate now which seems like it is finally working.. i have actually been drinking all day without much pain at all. I was sent home with percoset and zofran to help with the nausea. I am so glad we have pretty much finally figured this out. He said the fact i have been swallowing pills a little bigger than pencil eraser size at 5 weeks out could have caused an ulcer as well. He said sometimes very rarely they have to surgically go back in to repair an ulcer. Apparently a pill to large could just sit there and cause blood flow blockage which could be causing my pain. Hoping nothing got stuck as it went down okay. Only larger pills i have taken were cipro antibiotic and prilosec. ULCERS HURT!!! Surgeon again said all we can really do for it is medication to get rid of it.. which is why i am on carafate something is working though cause i am already feeling a bit better. For anyone who has had an ulcer how long did it take to fully go away? Just waiting for my endoscopy to confirm it will answer a lot!
SO sorry you are dealing with this. I'm pretty convinced I have an ulcer going on. Its not every day, but recently most days I wind up with a stomach pain that is not like anything I've ever known. It feels like acid or heartburn, but is just burning IN my stomach instead of moving up my esophogus, which is now virtually impossible since the whole point of my rNY was to fix my acid reflux. And it worked. So glad the carafate and meds are helping you. If what I have is an ulcer, I really feel for you on the pain...its pretty miserable.
I had surgery on 12/31 and ended up back in the hospital twice with ulcers. The second time was about a month out and I ended up with 3 bags of blood and cauterization. I feel for you, as the pain was so darn bad. I'm still on Protonix but finished the Carafate after a few weeks. It got better and I was feeling like it never would. I kept thinking that having this surgery was the worst decision i had ever made and I was so incredibly depressed. I'm 3 1/2 months out and i don't feel that way at all anymore. Still have a sensitive pouch and have to careful with foods, liquids, pills etc., but i think that this is wls related and not ulcer stuff. Good luck to you and I'm sending healthy pouch thoughts your way!

You know as much pain as i am/was in i still don't regret this decision. I was prepared for whatever would happen even if it meant me not making it out of the OR. I know there was a small cut in my small intestine that needed to be sutured during surgery. I have an 8 and 6 year old who need me. Without this surgery i wouldn't have a chance with all of my health issues. Pre-diabetes, sleep apnea, borderline high blood pressure, chronic skin infections. I was aware of all of the complications so i was not upset by anyone when i found this out because i knew this could happen. Is it painful? Absolutely but i am in the right spirits and i know this feeling of pain and frustration and all the meds i am taking is temporary. I am looking at the long term now
It could have been MUCH MUCH worse and i am just glad i had it checked early. My surgeons office is on top of it. I am already feeling a bit better.. still have some pain but already so much better. Every surgery carries risk. I did regret this surgery in the very beginning but not because of the surgery but because of the emotional aspects being on full liquids and wanting and missing real food so badly. Those feels dissipitated now though. So far every food i have eaten except cream of wheat has been agreeing very well with my new pouch... fluids are the ones aggravating my ulcer right now but like i said it's better. Glad to hear other's who have gone through and can give me advice and/or their experience with this and thanks.
What does your doctor think caused your ulcers? So glad you are doing better! :)

Not sure but possibly swallowing pills a little bigger than i should have is a possibility. I thought it was okay though since i could swallow them. But that is a possibility they could have formed for a completely different reason.
I had surgery back in Aug of 2011 and had an ulcer from a couple weeks out. I tried the carafate and also dialtion and nothing seemed to work. I was unable to eat and liquids came back up as well. At around seven months after surgery and being able to consume anything without it coming back up I went in for a revision and the doc removed the part of the intestine where it conected to the pouch because that is where the ulcer was. I would still go back and do everything over again knowing what I know now, even the seven months on liquids.
Weird thing was I never had pain till after the cauterization. Bloody stool is what brought me to the hospital.
Well i woke up this morning to coffee grind looking bowel movements. Diarrhea and looked like i had a few specks of dirt on the toilet paper when i wiped. I called the surgeon's office. My surgeon called me back and said it's all the signs of an ulcer but i read it could be an internal bleed sign too? She said if i feel the need to ever just go to the ER but she did say all of my blood work and upper GI looked good... apparently the ulcer isn't big enough to be seen on the upper GI but she is still wanting me to have my endoscopy ASAP. Treatment is what i am already doing carafate, pain medicine, anti nausea meds cause apparently i need them. She said i made a good call though going to the ER. She wants to get to the bottom of this but also says ulcer. I was in excrutiating pain last night.. ate mashed potatoes, ground chicken, and baby carrots.. i don't know if it was the food or the fact i was feeling so good yesterday i pushed 24 oz of water too much too fast.. but it hurt so bad i couldn't move my body felt like someone was stabbing my insides then the nausea right after not fun! Hoping i get my endoscopy sometime this week to confirm.
