3 years out and so lost...what do I do???

It's been awhile since I've logged in here... I was 3 years out in January and over the past year and 1/2 I've gained 65 lbs. I am so disappointed and lost. so I have come here hoping to find people that are 2 or more years out and are still on track. I need ideas on what to eat and how to get back on track.

If possible, I would love to see sample of your food for the day. I have no clue how many calories or how much food I should be eating at this point.

I really hope I didn't fail at the surgery and that I can get back on track to lose the weight I gained.

PLEASE HELP!

I would start with an appointment with your surgeon and an appointment with a registered dietician experience with RNY (not a nutritionist).

Do you know how many calories you get in a typical day now?  How many grams of protein?  How active are you?

Thank You for responding! I have been too ashamed to speak with my surgeon, but I know it's something I HAVE to do. I just sat down and made a food log of everything that I ate yesterday and lets just say it was really bad and not common. My total calories totaled 3410 angel and my protein added up to 92 grams. I have not been very active at all recently and I'm just really down about this whole thing. Today I swore that I was getting back on track so my partner packed me a chicken breast and salad for lunch, with 100 pack almonds for snacks. For breakfast I had oatmeal w/ peanut butter and my usual coffee. I have a treadmill and elliptical at home which I plan getting on tonight.

I think a lot of people are ashamed to see their surgeons if they gain some weight back, but unless your surgeon is brand new, he's seen regain before, and unless he's really stupid, he knows it can happen.  It's his job to help you, not to judge you or scold you or look down on you for needing his help.  But he can't help if you don't see him.  Make an appointment so he can make sure there's nothing physical contributing to the regain, and do labs to make sure you're getting the nutrients you need, and help you get back on track.  Let him do his job.

Good for you for keeping a food log yesterday and being really honest about it.  Try keeping one for a few days so you can give that info to your surgeon and dietician (make an appointment with a registered dietician as well as  your surgeon).  They can't do their jobs if you don't give them the information.

Take little steps.  What can you do today?  You have a good lunch packed.  Call and make your appointments.  Do a little exercise - doesn't need to be a lot, just a little bit, to get started.  Try ten minutes on the treadmill.  You can do anything for just ten minutes, right?

How about a support group?

Today I will contact my surgeons office and try to speak with him. I will also see what support groups are in my area. Today's a new day and I know it will take some time to get back to where I was but I'm determined and ready.

Thank You again!

I will be four years out in August, I've gained 20 lbs. and sucked it up and went back to my surgeon Two days ago. I was so scared of what he was going to say but he was more embarrassed that his office has not kept in touch with me. I have not seen him in three years. Do not be ashamed to go see the Dr. or the dietician. We can do this, lets get back on track and get back to that great feeling of being healthy and proud of our success. It is never to late!!!

You can do this; it will take work though no more free ride like the first year.  Do you remember the rules?  How many are you following or not?

Shoot for at least 64 oz. of water or other non-caloric liquids per day.

A dense protein, complex carb meal or snack is what you want to be doing.  Stay far, far away from simple carbs (corn, bread, potatoes, rice) and sweets

Wait at least 30 minutes after eating before you resume drinking

Are you taking all of your vitamins?  If not, get your labs done and get copies to see if you are deficient in anything.  If you aren't taking your vitamins start right now.

Measure and log your food intake.....you'll be surprised how much you can eat if you are aware and you should feel fairly satisfied if you are focusing on protein first at all times.

Get moving, any is better than none and if you are exercising step it up a bit.

Thank You! As of right now the only rule I'm following is no drinking while I eat. On a better note, I have continued to take my multi vitamins daily and my blood work has been good except a slightly low iron count.  I am starting my food log again today I'm just not sure how much food to measure out. How many oz of food should I be eating per meal? Like I said above, my intake yesterday was really bad and put a lot of things into perspective for me.

Thank You for all your help.

Christy, there is so much variance between people it's hard to say what would work for you.  I try to keep my calories between 1000-1300 per day, some days I can't get to 1000 and other days I can blow by 1300 easily.

I'm up to my self imposed high weight and tracking today.  Also planning my meals and snacks for the week.  Really, planning is key to me making good choices and I know that.  We've been running a lot with my son's baseball tournament team and I've not been taking care of my eating needs so before it gets away from me I'm committing to changes TODAY.

You need to probably play around with what works best for you.  Say 1500 calories per day could be a base point.  Try myfitnesspal.com many use it.  I've recently set up an account too although I've used fitday forever (and had many recipes in it) I find myfitnesspal really easy to use and I like the customization better than fitday.

A higher protein, lower carb diet will give you the most bang for your buck keeping you full and not craving the carbs (like many of us experience when we eat to many).

Yeah, I've started using my fitness pal and really like it. It helps to see exactly what you're eating everyday so hopefully this will help me get a start.

Thank You so much for all your advice!
