alchohol
It's really not a good idea for some of us to drink after surgery. My doctor said definitely not for a year - I didn't follow directions and began at six months. To make a long story short I ended up in my first rehab in 2008 and after many more I finally have been sober for 17 months. Alcohol goes straight through me and I am drunk on the first sip, black out, and drink I don't know how many more, I was drinking continuosly for the last five months before God granted my sobriety.
My recommendation is don't drink but if you feel the need to try it wait as long as you can and drink the first time at home. That way you can see how you react before you go out and potentially end up with a DWI as I did.
Good luck whatever you decide.
I've never had a problem with alcohol addiction and drink a glass of red wine now and then. Also do well with margherita's as long as they're made low low sugar at home, Crown and diet coke occasionally.
I wouldn't suggest hitting the alcohol for the first time anywhere but home and take it easy.
For me, it's a quick buzz and a quick sober up but I NEVER, repeat NEVER drive - even after one drink. I feel ok, but am sure I am too impaired to drive...

My surgery was in September, had my first drink on New Years. didn't feel like I was tipsy sooner or later, but I had a margarita for Cinco de Mayo and it hit me hard! But I did have to drink it quickly. lol I'm not a huge drinker, just on occassions, but I haven't had any problems - get a quick buzz then it goes away quickly too.
i am 5 months out & had my first glass of Sangria 2 weeks ago & did just fine. Since then I've had a glass at night a few times & still no problems...although i must say that I am feeling it even after just one glass. I guess some people may have problems with it, but I went in slow to make sure. Now, I probably wouldn't try beer for a while, if at all...too bubbly & I think it would really upset my tummy..
I've had a couple of glasses of wine at a time 3 times since surgery. It was ok and I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. And I felt like CRAP the next day. Way out of proportion for how little I drank. Probably a combo of never really drinking, and the sugar and alcohol in the wine, and our new physiology. But holy moly, did I REALLY feel it - for more than one day. Felt almost flu-like with achyness, chills, headache, dragging body and mind. I enjoyed wine in moderation pre-surgery and I have these romantic visions of having a glass here and there this summer....but it looks like I will really have to plan it out. Not to mention the extra calories it adds to the daily count - not worth it to me 99% of the time. I love the taste of wine and microbrew beer and loved learning about it and tasting new wines, so I'm hoping that I can drink a little here and there over the years.
I have had some wine since surgery (one was Moscotto and another time-white zinfandel) with no problems. I didn't notice a different effect either. Some people say that they feel a buzz quicker post surgery but I have not noticed that for me.

I don't have an addiction issue. Food addiction was never my issue either.
