Had a MRI yesterday and found out the cause of my horrid leg/back pain!

Back pain has been going on about 3 months.. leg pain started a month ago pretty much to the point of being completely immobile. X-Ray was normal. MRI yesterday shows i have a herniated disk in my back. Muscle relaxers and even some narcotics are barely touching the pain. And guess what? Steroids and NSAID'S are not an option because of my gastric bypass. I already asked my surgeon. Anyway i meet with the orthopedic doctor on Tuesday to discuss treatment options i just want to feel better but it seems to be one thing after another with me =(

Why aren't steroids an option?  They are usually considered safe for RNY patients.

From what I've read, NSAIDS are fairly likely to cause ulcers but steroids are not likely to, at least not if used for less than three weeks.  You might want to get a second opinion or ask your surgeon to show you the research he's basing his advice on.

With steroids the risk increases with dose and duration of a treatment.
But a localized steroids shot - epidural - may help temporary so you can start exercising and physical therapy.

I have a foot issue (spur at the top of the back of the ankle pushing into the achilles tendon).  I told my orthopedic doctor that I couldn't take NSAIDS.  He had a cream made for me from a compounding pharmacy that has the NSAIDS and anti inflamatories in it.  I got it in the mail.  I apply it as needed.  Maybe your doc could do that.
