I am embarrassed to ask, but I have severe constipation problems. I only go every 4 days and when It happens, my stools are so hard that it is very painful and I have to spend a lot of time on the toilet. I take something similar to Miralax once a day. Any suggestions?

Try milk of magnesia for a quick fix. Start adding fiber powder to your water and use colace.

I use Miralax usually once  or twice a day to stay regular. Every once in a while I go off it for a day or two.I've finally gotten used to knowing when I need it, and how often. I've noticed some of the similar products just don't seem to work as well. I learned the hard way not to strain. Go out and buy some glycerin suppositories, they work like magic within an hour. One more thing, it helps to stay hydrated.

At night, I take one womens laxative and I go to the bathroom the next morning.  I do that almost every day.

I have had the same problem. I add Miralax to my shake every morning. It has helped so much. I also started taking Baractic Advantage Probiotic every day. Have had no problem since.

I take 3 NON stimulant stool softeners at night before bed. I also take Sundown Naturals, Perfect iron. Seems to be easier on my stomach. And I take a calcium with magnesium. I generally go every day, normally either while I am drinking my shake or right after.

Just make sure your taking a non stimulant stool softener. Just something to make it easier to pass. Add in fiber powder. I get one at walmart, its Equate, Sugar free. flavor free. Comes in a green/white bottle.

You're almost certainly not getting enough fiber (and water to support it).  It's a very easy mistake to make, especially if you overemphasize protein like too many RNY patients do.  If all you eat is dairy and protein you're going to get plugged up.  ;)

I've had these problems in the past and I've combat them by adjusting my diet: my breakfast is always high-fiber.  This morning I had a slice of Ezekiel 7-grain toast with 1tbsp of almond butter, topped with half a banana sliced up.  7g of fiber, which about 1/3 of what you need for the day.  Other mornings I will have muesli cereal with soy milk and fresh raspberries, which is a whopping 13g of fiber.

I've also become somewhat addicted to dry-roasted edamame (soybeans).  1/4c is 8g fiber and 14g protein.  Freaking amazing and healthful snack.

You need to push those veggies and whole grains.  Don't be afraid of carbs and get adequate protein (not excessive).

Of course, you have to drink a lot of water with that fiber or your problems will only worsen.  I also don't know when you had surgery so some of this may be impossible for you now.

Try not to use laxatives regularly, you'll become dependent on them

Increase your intake of fruit, if you can. Prunes are good.

try a stool softener, which you can take daily. ask you pharmacist for suggestions.

add something like metamucil to your regime daily.

Mom is good but not for long term use. My surgeon recommended senna tablets daily. I only take them if I go more than two days with no BM they are OTC take two before bed and I have results foowing morning.

Colace doesn't move me.

I have a bag of dried cherries, no sugar added. They are 11 calories each. I eat three or four at night and the next morning--voila! But I also increase my water to about 80 oz the day I am going to have cherries.
