Adipex is not Phen Phen.  It is phentermine and topomax.

Actually, Adipex is just phentermine and has been around since the 1970s. In the '90s it was part of the Phen-Fen combo, which was pulled from the market due to reports of heart valve issues, but phentermine is still available.  There is a new drug that came out in 2012 that combines phentermine and Topamax called Qysmia.    I have taken phentermine many times over the last 15 years. Essentially it is a stimulant, very similar to amphetamines. It works pretty good in the short term for controlling appetite because you are essentially wired, hyper, and want to be active. I would recommend taking it in the morning so it won't interfere with your sleep. Also, you might want to watch/cut back on your caffeine intake.    Wishing you well!

I've taken it twice in the past. It worked great for about 7-10 days then nothing. And I hardly slept even when taking it in the morning.

Surgery weight:  232 lbs. / Goal: 145 lbs. Height:  5'5"     Fat? Ain't nobody got time for that.

I have used Adipex and it was a great tool! I lost 30# in the three months I was on it! Drink lots if water as you tend to get dry mouth, and don't plan on sleeping much so fill those extra hours working out. Good luck to you.

I believe I have taken every diet pill under the sun. I lose for a couple of weeks then gain it back and then some. Now that Ive had rNY surgery, I dont dare take any diet pills. I dont want to take a chance gaining any weight.

Gotta be honest--I would be more than a little bothered that a WLS surgeon was giving out drugs to help with weight loss. The whole point, as I understand it, is to learn new, healthier habits that give you the pre-surgery weight loss. Not a pill.

That is just no

Please consult your surgeon & nutritionist for how to do it their way.  Biggest regret? Not doing this 10 years ago! Every day is better than the day before...and it was a pretty great day!

At first when I looked at this post, my first thought was I on the right website! I have to agree with PetHairMagnet on this one! WLS is a serious weight loss tool, not a quick fix for awhile and then go back to doing whatever! I would have to question the motives of that surgeon to give you a diet pill to help with losing weight. The whole point of losing any amount of weight before this surgery is to learn how to eat healthier, learn to exercise and be more active! Not do the same things (take pills) that didn't do much for us in the first place that brought us to the WLS.

Where do you live? Is this surgeon really good? How do you know if he is? Is the hospital he is preforming in a "Center of Excellence" for bariatric surgery? Have you done any homework on this surgeon? This would be a read flag in my book when a surgeon gave me an adipex prescript to help get the surgery date by a certain time~what did you mention~September? How much weight do you have to lose? Even if you are injured, are in much pain, you can still change to healthier eating and still lose weight by what is going in your body.

Opps, I am so sorry, but I would have to do some more digging on this surgeon and all of his qualifications before I "rushed" to lose weight to meet "his" deadline for surgery! After I met the insurance's guideline's (which had no weight loss requirement~although I did lose 42 before surgery in 6 months), I still had control over when I wanted to choose when to have this surgery. It had all been approved and I had up to 6 months to pick a date according to the insurance, not the doctor! This is your body, not his! I am so sorry, once again, I just don't like it when I think or "feel" that someone maybe pushed through the "mill". I don't know where you live or who this surgeon is, I just find it insane to give you a diet pill to lose weight before WLS!

Give this some thought, but I would not take the adipex. I have had it before and could only take 1/2 a pill a day and it had to be 24 hours a part because it got me to nerveous, jittery and I finally quit taking it! I would not do it, but this is all up to you and all your choice. Will be praying for ya!
