What is the maximum amount of protein?
When I first started on here there was a study published and my doc gave me a handout showing that we absorb between 25-30 gms of protein at a time. He told me to drink something with more was a waste as I wasn't absorbing it anyway. Most go by the 25-30 gm rule. You won't absorb 40 grams so if you don't need the extra calories stick to something less.

if you can't absorb the extra grams - where the calories are coming from?
We may need only # gr of proteins for muscles and repairs.. rest - will be burned for fuel.
The idea is to get enough so the body will burn the fat first - and if that process is not enough - there will be enough supplied so the body can repair itself and not use our own proteins- muscles for fuel. But too many calories at one time - and the body will store that as fat.. or do not use our fat for energy..
