Nasty Post

Ok. Now I see where the term came from. Sounds right. But, I do think there is a difference between harsh and being sympathetic. Some people, from what I see, abuse their knowledge that new comers like me want to learn. I want to be educated, but not from someone who thinks they are my surgeon. Ya know? I really do appreciate the responses I get from people on here 99% of the time...

I'm not referring to anything in the last week....just in general. If people don't agree with me or like me they can block me. That's all I'm saying...I'm looking for answers and education...

I love my surgeon. He is great... but when I was 2+ years out - and felt like crap, my doc told me that my labs are OK.   And I felt like I was dying inside... A "vet" review my lab work results and pointed out to me that even though my labs are theoretically OK, normal, a lot of them were low normal.. and below optimum level.  So I had to double some vitamins, increased my proteins and push for iron infusions...  (my iron was too low for me, and my D's and proteins and B12).

Sometimes vet know more that the doc does... They've been there - researched, and many times see it all.. in themselves or in others..

WOW! I think that's really great that they were able to point that out for them! I'm just saying for me specifically, I'm not comfortable taking medical advice from someone who is not a physician or my surgeon,, and I definitely wouldn't show anyone my medical records...but, again, that's just me. I come here to learn from other people's experiences and compare to what I'm feeling and what it may be like in the future. This website, to me, is just one big learning process. I don't necessarily agree with your last statement, but again..we can agree to disagree :)

it is live and learn...  I have doc that are brilliant, but they still learn from me and others...  You need to do what is best for you...

Honestly, there are people here that can give you MUCH better, more accurate info about living successfully with your surgery than your surgeon can---because they have been there and done that.

Haley, for the most part I don't believe the vets intentionally want to come across harsh and stern but it happens sometimes.  I can promise you those I know on these boards really DO want the best for everyone.  We've seen lots on this boards in the years we've been here, a LOT including people dying because they weren't doing what they needed to do so it's a passionate yet stern reply to HOPEFULLY prevent someone from going down that road.

I know I've had times I came across harsh and I'm not a mean person at all.  I give the benefit of doubt to everyone (sometimes too much as I'm told many times by my family.  I trust everyone and get burned sometimes.)

Take what you want from the boards and leave the rest.  What I will say is as you are here longer and you see some of the crazy post of what people are doing and attempting to be told it's OK you'll find yourself getting frustrated too.  I would almost place a bet on this one because I've BTDT.

Surgeons are cutters, they take one semester of nutrition in school, ONE that doesn't give them much time to truly learn about nutrition.  Some NUTS get it while others don't, they understand the general population NOT the WLS community always so sometimes you have to take that with a grain of salt also.  As for vitamin/mineral supplementation.....that one is a pet peeve for many of us, again because we've been there and have continued to research what our needs are.  It's better I PROMISE to follow the ASBMS general guidelines and supplement additionally according to your lab trends.

If you (general you) aren't getting copies of your labs and tracking them I STRONGLY recommend you do, surgeons and PCPs don't look at downward trends but as deficiencies so you can prevent a deficiency if you are trending your labs to see declines anywhere.  I've been proactive and wonder if I hadn't done this what shape I would be in today.  I would venture to say 90% of post-ops (including vets) that trend their labs have been able to keep from having deficiencies.

Edit:  I've blocked people on these boards numerous times, sometimes for short periods and some I still have blocked because their post come across as "better than others" and their tone to ME comes across as constantly condescending.  It's made my experience here very much more enjoyable.
