Your post made me smile in the best possible way.  :-)  I love the attitude, and hope I can mirror it.

I started at 385 August 1st, surgery was the 15th (359), and I'm one month post op (337). My surgeon told me I will probably only lose 150 lbs. It bothered me as well. But when I went in for my post op appointment they were amazed I've lost 48lbs already. They are going by the average person but around 50% of people are above average. Just remember you can do anything you set your mind too. Congrats on your journey so far and don't let anyone hold you back (even doctors can be wrong). Good luck.

Thanks for the encouragement.  I think that's what I needed to hear today!

Many of us lose a lot more than our surgeon's expect us to because the "average" expected weight loss for RNY is 100lbs - anything over that is most definitely a bonus!

My only worry with telling you that he's talking rubbish is that you may be setting yourself up for a big disappointment if your expectations are too high.

Can you find your way to thinking of the 100lbs as a provisional goal?  That way you can really celebrate every pound you lose over that rather than chasing a goal weight that may or may not be attainable.   Every pound you lose is a check in the healthier box - whether you end up at 200lbs or 150lbs!!!!

Good luck - you can do this!!!

Good suggestion.  At this point, I'm thankful for every pound I lose.  I just hate being told that I can't reach my goal.  But his manner is pretty dry and to the point, so I guess that's just how he communicates with people.   No encouragement and certainly no sugar coating things (which I'm actually fine with).

It's a rare surgeon that has a good bedside manner - a lot of them choose surgery because they prefer their patients unconscious kiss.   Most of their patient contact and care is handled by PA's NP's and nurses for precisely that reason!

Yes, I think you are right!  I don't question his skills as a surgeon.  My surgery went really well and my recovery has been really smooth.   He just caught me off guard with his answer to my question.

I would think that if you put effort into it, nothing would stop you from getting to the weight you want..... just like someone who didn't have any surgery. I'm sure the 1st hundred lbs will be easier, but just let motivation take you the rest of the way !!!

That's what I'm going to try to do!  My personal goal is less than my PCP's goal for me (at my height, I'd really like to be around 120-125).  I will be "satisfied" in the 135 - 150 range, however.  But 200...no way!

All he's done now is **** me off...and watch out when I get peeved!  It just makes me work harder to prove someone wrong!  I can't wait until he sees me surpass his expectation for me!
