Carafate Question
Hi
I was given Carafate to protect my new pouch seam because the cardio Dr wanted me on aspirin.
I take it 10 minutes before meals. Seems like the food has a harder time going down since I'm on the Carafate. Is this normal?

I am on Carafate 4x a day because of an ulcer at the anastomasis (where the pouch is connected to the esophagus). I don't know if food is harder to go down as i was on the carafate before I started eating food but if i swallow anything without the carafate first, it's excruciatingly painful. If I HAD to take aspirin, I'd make sure it's enteric coated so that it could possibly pass through the pouch before dissolving? Trust me when I say that you do NOT want an ulcer. I find the carafate to be some nasty stuff and I can't wait for this ulcer to heal. I'm 3 weeks out and I've just started on soft foods in the past 3 days.
Take it 15-20 minutes before meals and you shouldn't have a problem. I was on carafate a few years ago when I had an ulcer. I am ok to take asprin (or even Nsaids) now. the Carafate is amazing - does the trick and allows those that need daily aspirin therapy to take it. Follow your doc's orders. You'll be fine and your new pouch protected.
