Approval & No protein drinks
My post op started with clear liquids whi*****luded protein drinks and then the 3rd or 4th day added runny oatmeal and yogurt. Early out was added refried beans and taco meat which I could only take a bite of and be done so there wasn't much protein consumption there. I wasn't getting much in protein shakes as I gagged on them. Eventually, I could drink through a straw or bottle finding it helped somewhat if I couldn't smell them. To this day I don't care much for the taste.
The first few days I concentrated on water. I kept trying a bite or two at each meal until I finally could eat. Until then, as long as I stayed hydrated, I was not dizzy. My taste buds were so whack that I even had problems with water. I tried several different bottled waters until settling on one that didn't taste like salt. Eventually things calmed down so I could drink the filtered water from the fridge and certain protein shakes. To this day I can't eat a protein bar.
I've had several opportunities to visit with surgeons that differ on pre and post op routines and find it interesting. Some want patients to supplement with protein powders/shakes as part of a daily nutrition while others prefer patients not use. I was curious so asked one surgeon that prefers her patients not use the product and she stated they were an unnecessary expense. I explained my issues and she said she has patients like me and they do the same I am doing and that there was no harm in consuming the protein shakes. She recommends eating a lot of fish once able but I don't like fish. The one area that they have all agreed on is the importance of vitamin supplementation. Here again, they don't agree on the exact timeframe when to add vitamins post op.
It is true that eventually the patient figures out what works best for themselves by knowing their own body and educating themselves. This is where I am. I followed to the letter what my surgeon and nut prescribed pre and early post op. They remain very helpful as I work out what is working best for me at my present stage. I am very fortunate to have a WLS that wants to follow the patient with post op blood work appointments and check ups. The surgeon and nut facilitate a support group meeting. I just wish I lived close enough to attend as I found the two I got to attend full of good information and I got to sample things.
We are all on the same journey and can encourage and learn from one another even though we do not do things exactly alike. There are things that I choose to do that others would not want to do but we can all be healthy and successful in our weight loss.
