I'm all out of wack! Low iron, b-12 and high A1C, what's a girl suppose to do?

I feel fine though, better than I have felt in years.  I'm taking my b-12 (sublingual), I may have to go to injections for now.  What really has me confused is on my portal with my Surgeons office, they told me to take 325 mg of iron a day.  I think this is a mistake (I have a call in for them to call me back).  If this is possible, could someone tell me where I can find iron pills with that many mg in it?  Because the one I have is 30 mg, and I would need to take a box a day to meet this requirement, LOL!

p.s. I take my blood sugar reading twice a day every day and it comes back within range, even after I eat.  I'm going to take 1/2 of what I used to take and see what happens.

325mg of ferrous sulfateis what they are talking about. But that isnt the best kind for you to take. You want to take a Carbonyl Iron, and I would stay at least 100mg  plus 1000 mg of vitamin C if your iron is low. Also what dose of B12 are you taking?? I take 2500mcg every day to keep my levels high enough.

For the iron You can take http://www.walgreens.com/store/c/sundown-naturals-high-poten cy-perfect-iron-tablets/ID=prod6021585-product   I would take at least 4 a day, but it really does depend on how low your iron is to bring it back up.

Thanks Angeleigh, I take 1000 mg B-12 a day, I will double it from now on. Is it okay to take them at the same time?

Yes, you can take them at the same time. I take 1 a day but its 2500 mcg in one sublingual tablet. Depending on what your B12 levels are you may need more then that. You cant take to much B12. anything you dont need will be eliminated when you go to the bathroom.

Your doctor is probably recommending ferrous sulfate.  325 mg ferrous sulfate is equivalent to 65 mg elemental iron.  The 30 mg iron pills you have are probably carbonyl iron, which is all elemental iron.  You might want to take carbonyl instead of ferrous sulfate, just a higher dose, since carbonyl is absorbed better and is much less likely to cause constipation.  Depending on  your level, though, you may need much more than 30 mg.  I currently do take 300 mg carbonyl iron.  And no, there are no pills with that much carbonyl iron in them - I take 12 pills with 25 mg each.  What was your iron level?  Your ferritin?

Thanks poet_kelly for coming in here and helping me out.  This is what it says:

Iron Bind.Cap: (TIBC) 287

UIBC                           259

Iron, Serum                28

Iron Saturation           10

I don't know if I can 10 - 11 pills at one time per day.  I guess I will have to though.

Yeah, that's super low.

I take six iron pills at one time and six at another time.

Kelly,

Can you tell me who sells carbonyl Iron?  Do you have to order it online?

There are two brands I'm aware of that are available in stores - Sundown Perfect Iron and Feosol.  Feosol makes both carbonyl and ferrous sulfate, so if you buy that brand, make sure you get the one you want to get.  I've found Sundown at Meijer and Rite Aid.  Someone recently told me they get it at Food Lion.  I think CVS and Walmart both carry Feosol.  I often order the Sundown from drugstore.com, though, because they often have it cheaper than I can get it in stores, even with shipping costs.  Unless I have a coupon.  The Sundown Naturals website sometimes has good coupons.
