I want to tell you a story about my ulcer from HE!!
I have been in complete agony! I am taking carafate and another 2 in 1 PPI some times of the day i feel a little better and will try to eat/drink. Today i have been able to do 1/2 greek yogurt, 1 chicken sausage, 1 small turkey meatball, pure protein RTD shake, 1/2 of pure protein bar, english muffin with a little pb and sf jelly, and a couple of pb ritz crackers. A lot more than usual but still not enough. Upon finishing my sausage/meatball and getting full very quickly it didn't agree with me and then came the horrible nausea and stomach pain/sweating.
I don't wish an ulcer post-op RNY to anyone it's not fun! I have to forcefully through pain and all eat something and still manage to stay hydrated and get all my meds in.. all 17 of them. I've lost 15 lbs since the end of September and i will be 8 months post-op on November 5th. I know it doesn't help that i don't eat much but still. The only things that don't seem to irritate the ulcer all the time is cheese stick, RTD protein shakes, and protein bar (quest) weird right?? I cannot do crystal light packets right now either because the acidity in them hurts my ulcer worse.
How many post-op's have developed an ulcer?
We thought I had an ulcerated pouch. It turned out to be a form of gastritis in which the intestine are inflamed and swollen. I, too, have to take carafate to coat the lining and take two antacids. I had to be hospitalized for 3 days to give my intestines a break and was fed intravenously. It seems to have worked well. I'm feeling so much better now! I wish the same for you. It's definitely difficult trying to get enough protein and water in plus all the vitamins when this is going on.
Anyway, i hope you start to feel well soon.

I'm sorry you've had such a hard time. I think I read somewhere that about 3% of RNY gets ulcers. It sounds like yours is worse than some, though. I think maybe it depends on the size of the ulcer and how severe it is. I've know some people that had to have an EGD for some reason and found out they had an ulcer but they hadn't even realized it because they had no symptoms or only very minor symptoms.
I hope yours gets better soon. You've been dealing with this for a while, haven't you?
Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.

Kelly i have been dealing with gastrtis since April 1 month post-op. I just found out there is an ulcer as well.
Constipation i have been dealing with a while as well. I cannot see someone not realizing they had an ulcer it hurts like bad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When I have ulcer - I try to eat very light - easy to digest food. Nothing raw, no nuts, nothing acidic, and my portions are very small. Your pouch has a sore and it is swollen. Any food that will rub on it or try to stretch it or make you body to produce more acid (sausage) will pobably hurt like hell .
I typically drink mild protein shakes, soups, cheese. Nothing too salty, too cold or too hot.
Hope the meds and diet helps you heal quickly. I learned that I need to followe easy diet for 2-3 weeks, introducing food slowly in week 3... If I try to eat too many things too fast - my ulcerr would return....

Acckk! I haven't had ulcers for many years, but my gut wrenched when I read what you've been eating! Sausage? English muffin? protein bar? Didn't they give you any dietary guidelines?
The usual rules are to eat only mild foods that are easily digestible. Spicy foods are out (like pouring iodine in an open cut). Breads and protein bars are hard for many RNY people to digest, even months or years out, and you've thrown them on a wounded tummy. Really hot or really cold foods are usually uncomfortable. Think of it this way--an ulcer is an open wound. If you wouldn't put something on an open cut on your hand, why would you put it on your ulcer?
Take good care of yourself!

Nope, not as of yet my appointment is Wednesday with the dietician but they briefly went over things i could try. RTD protein as being one of them since i can drink at room temp. The pure protein RTD shake goes down well so that is good. Greek yogurt is still a tossup it hurts sometimes and i can't eat all of it. Anything to cold especially water hurts! I can handle tea from my keurig and it feels fine. Protein bars don't bother me... as far as the English muffin it didn't seem to bother me and i figured it was better than nothing. I cannot handle regular bread or pasta usually though nor rice. I was also told to try sweet potatoes. I will find out more on wednesday but for now fluid wise i am relying upon the greek yogurt, powerade zero, regular room temp water, and tea to try to get me in at least 32-48oz a day. I don't eat spicy foods or caffeinated products anymore. The sausage wasn't spicy just had spinach and cheese and it was a chicken sausage.
