Timing of meals?????

So, my surgeon & dietician have told me to only eat when I either feel hungry, am weak, dizzy or super fatigued and liquid does not help.  Last night I had 3/4 of a scrambled egg at 7 am after having 16oz water and 12oz decaf coffee from 5:30am to 7am. Then about 1:30 pm I started feeling really weak and crummy, already had 32oz more water, so I ate 4 TBSP can chicken with shredded mozzarella heated up. Then I kept drinking my water, had 32oz, and about 9pm started getting that weak, crappy feeling, so I had some Greek yogurt with 1 TBPS PB2 powder.  Because of the lateness of the yogurt, I could not go to sleep until about midnight :-(.

So my question is, should I east sooner in the evening so I can go to bed or should I wait it out and eat when I get that crappy weak feeling?  ( I am 16 days post op).

I don't like feeling crappy and weak so I would eat before I felt that bad.  and I sure would not stay awake just waiting to feel crappy so I could then eat and finally go to bed.

I agree. I was watching a movie and that is when I started feeling yucky, so I needed to eat.  I think I will make it a point to eat a dinner on a schedule.

Thanks Poet Kelly

I eat at set times especially during the week when my schedule is much easier to control. Breakfast, mid-morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack, and dinner are pretty much on schedule. If I get hungry before I go to bed I'll get a light snack, but that is the only meal for me that is strictly dictated on how I feel. The rest are scheduled.

I think I am going to have to do that as well.

Thanks for the input

I usually eat every 2-3 hours. Sometimes a bit longer depending on the last item I ate & the time of day. For example, I always have yogurt for breakfast. I find that I start feeling sick (my new hunger signal) about 2 hours later. But, if I have tuna & crackers for lunch, I can go 3-4 hours until supper. I personally wouldn't wait anymore than 4 hours to eat. I feel that because we eat so little at each meal/snack, that our bodies need refueling more often. That is just my opinion :)

I would clarify that they really meant what you took away. A doctor telling you to wait until you are weak and dizzy to eat is not a doctor I'd be seeing for care, personally. I can go a pretty long time without either of those happening to me pre-op and I know now, I could likely go a whole lot longer. But it doesn't mean I am treating my body right by doing so.

Each day I have an alarm on my phone that sounds to remind me to log breakfast, lunch and dinner. If I have not eaten yet when it goes off for any of those, I sit down and eat fairly immediately. I also try to do 2 snacks a day, but am sure to get those meals in. I just finished lunch which was only because my alarm went off at 2:20 reminding me. So I heated up what I'd made this morning for lunch and ate without delay.

I know everyone has their own plan from their surgeon, but not eating until hungry...I"d hardly ever eat and waiting until weak or dizzy...sounds like a recipe for blood sugar issues and general health concerns, personally.

Please consult your surgeon & nutritionist for how to do it their way.  Biggest regret? Not doing this 10 years ago! Every day is better than the day before...and it was a pretty great day!

Thank you for your input. I went back and re-read my instructions and I am correct on what they say. I have another appt with my dietician the week after Thanksgiving but I will email her now as well. She always replies super quick.  I think I am going to start eating on a set schedule because I don't like that yucky feeling at all and I really cannot tell if I  hungry. A couple of times I have gotten a weird empty feeling and I eat and it was gone. So that may be my clue to eat.

That is the most bizarre set of eating guidelines I have ever heard.  It defies all common sense to wait to eat until you feel awful.  No, it's just plain stupid.

Eating on schedule at least makes sense.
