What's on the menu today, RNY-ers?
Time passed since surgery: About 4 1/2 months (8/21/2013)
Breakfast: I had 3/4 egg with a little salsa.
Lunch: Taking a naked grilled chicken nugget to work with a dab of A-1 on it.
Dinner: Making riceless stuffed bell peppers using turkey sausage.
Had a medium-sized cup of coffee with a scoop of protein powder in it this morning. Taking a small bit of beef jerkey to work with me for a snack.
Vitamins/liquids - On track.
Exercise: I usually don't do any extra exercise on work days. I'm on my feet and very active at work.
The official 'recipe' only calls for garlic and S&P...but I like spicy flavors. So I usually put in some red pepper flakes and a little bit of chili powder, too.
Time passed since surgery: 3 weeks
Breakfast: Premier Protein Shake
Lunch: 2 oz. Tuna Salad (tuna, low fat mayo, sweet relish), 1/2 slice wheat toast, 1/4 cup 2% cottage cheese
Dinner: 1/2 cup lentil soup with carrots
Snacks: sf jello, 1 oz. part skim mozzarella cheese
Total nutrition: haven't calc'd it out yet
Exercise/vitamins/water: so far 15 min. treadmill on speed 2/ on track / on track
We had surgery the same day! Hope you are feeling as great as I am :) Relish might be good for me to add to tuna - my NUT told me not to add raw onion (cooked is ok) but I like some crunch...I can chop up a dill pickles!!!
I track everything in the app (it's online too) MyFitnessPal. It's so easy. It's the only way I can stay on track. Writing things down does not work for me (I found that out the hard way).
:)
You seem to have more energy than I do!!
:)
I'm surprised you have already adapted chile (geen) into your diet, and balsamic vinegar too. I'm terrified of burning my new pouch. I have yet to try tomatoes or anything acidic. Where have you been getting your ideas for eating in our stage (soft/blended), oh, and are blending your chicken, or just eating as is?? I'm glad I found someone to compare notes with. Thanks!
Renee
Hey Renee! I had the easiest surgery - I have told my surgeon that I think I am in the placebo group. I had it Monday afternoon, was walking and going to the bathroom that night, was released Tuesday morning, was interviewing people on the phone Wednesday, walked to the grocery store on Thursday, and went out with friends on Friday. I was back at the office on Monday. NOTHING seems to bother my pouch. I have had no feelings of fullness, no needing to sip sip sip one ounce at a time. I am actually kind of pissed about it...I want to be that person that says "I can barely fit in 2 tablespoons of food!". But alas, I am working on pretty much all willpower at this point. I mean, obviously I had something done - I would have been starving living on 500 or 600 calories a day in the olden days. But honestly I thought something would fill me up or get stuck in my throat and nada.
My doctor's diet is two weeks liquids pre-op, two weeks liquids post-op. That included yogurt and cottage cheese and sugar free jello and broth and protein shakes. That's it. On my 2 week and one day surgiversary, I went to the doc and he put me on soft solids. This includes lean proteins like fat free turkey, chicken, shrimp, fish, eggs. Also lean foods like light cheese. I of course can continue yogurt and cottage cheese and protein shakes but I am SOOOO tired of those things after a month of only that!
The first thing I did was make egg salad out of hard boiled eggs, a tbsp of light mayo, a dollup of mustard, and salt and pepper. No issues. Then I had chicken, 3 oz and chewed up super small and mashed. No issues. Then I tried 99% fat free ground turkey with taco seasoning and a little light cheese. No issue. I love spicy food so I add red hot pepper flakes to everything. No issues. My doctor doesn't require that we puree food but we have to chew it like it's our job. 20-30 chews per bite, put the fork down between bites, take 15-20 minutes to eat your 3-4 ounce meal. Grrrr, like I said, I wish I just couldn't fit in any food at all but it's all about measuring, weighing and limiting for me :) My doctor says I am doing great and this is how RNY is supposed to go. My NUT says she is mildly concerned I can eat 4 ounces so soon after surgery. My thing is, I don't snack. I just allow myself three meals. And I track it so carefully. And I am not hungry between meals - I am drinking crystal light now, and the sweetness helps satiate me.
I am not on anything acidic like tomatoes or limes, though I did have some raw tuna yesterday with a tiny slice of avocado. Oh and the canned green chiles today lol. Ok so maybe I am on acidic stuff :)
I would love to compare notes! I am always wondering if I am doing things right and what other people are doing. I have a friend from my support group and an email friend from this site, and I am always open to chatting with other people and supporting each other and helping each other.
Have you started working out? I had the surgery at 351 lbs, I am now at 327, and I want to get back on the treadmill but because I am at such a low calorie count, I have trouble doing exercise because I get dizzy out of the blue. How about you?
You are too funny.
I too feel like I can eat too much. I trip out when I read peoples blogs/messages that they eat 2 oz and are full! Right now, I am holding myself back from eating more, though I think I can. I sometimes get the "full" sensation, when I have eaten 4 oz., but not always. I seriously think my Doctor made me a larger pouch. I haven't had my post op visit yet (1/10/14), nor talked to the Nut, since it was the holidays. I've pretty much relied on the veterans on this site, like Poet Kelly, to get some important information.
I started walking on my treadmill yesterday, just 15 min on speed 2 is all I can handle right now. I'm still tired, but not too bad. Since the surgery, I posted that I have had a numbness in my left thigh. It feels sore most of the time, and after more than 30 minutes walking/standing/ it starts to burn, like no ones business. My GP says its probably due to nerve pressure, and may require physical therapy. The surgeon had me do an ultrasound to check for blood clots and I'm sure I was cleared, or I would have went back into the hospital.
Surgery went really well actually. Recovery too - but not quite as well as yours :). My daughter and I had GBP surgery the same day. It wasn't suppose to happen that way, but there was an opening, and I took it. I work at a school, so we were on vacation, so that worked out well.
I'm getting impatient about my weight loss though. 13 pounds since surgery. I did however lose 27 pounds post surgery (Nov 1 - Dec 15), and that was tough. I know I just need more patience, that it will come off in time.
It sounds like you are doing REALLY great. I know your working hard at it, logging everything counting calories and all. I wonder if you need more calories to help with your stamina on the treadmill. Ask your NUT.
Take care. We'll keep in touch, and I look forward to reading your posts. (alot of your questions will help answer mine I'm sure)
Renee
Ironically my thighs were SO sore after surgery. Like, more sore than my stomach! I was like "what is going on?". I asked the doctor and he told me that they have your legs in stirrups. And they actually STAND BETWEEN YOUR LEGS TO DO THE SURGERY lol. I for some reason pictured them at my side, doing their thing. But no, apparently I was straddling my doctor :) I mean, they are used to it, but it's still a funny image :)
A friend of mine had nerve damage in her leg after giving birth - her leg was being pushed too far back. I wonder if yours is the same? She did PT and
I did ask my NUT if I needed more calories and she said they don't give a calorie guideline, just a protein and fluid guideline. I am just SO paranoid and have so much to lose and so by limiting myself to 500-700 calories I feel like I can't fail :)
You have lost 40 lbs overall, pre and post? That is awesome! I did find I had a short stall - 3 days of the same weight and then gained a lb and then started losing again! There are so many posts I have read about the "3 week stall" and stalls in general and how your body will hold onto weight, then lose, then hold on, then lose. I would like to go to a once a week weight check but it's just so tempting when I walk by the scale...I understand your impatience though!
I don't want you to have the same problem I do, but it is kinda nice to know that someone else has a big ole pouch. How is your daughter's experience? Ask your doc for your surgery report. I did but it wasn't yet available. I literally need to see that my stomach was operated on. I'm still skeptical ;)
I definitely want to keep in touch and compare and contrast! Though I know everyone has their own journey blah blah blah :)
