Do I or don't I?

I have spent the last several minutes looking and dreaming at different clothing items.  I found a cardigan, a double breasted pea coat, and a totally cute shirt/sweatshirt.  The cardigan and especially the cute shirt/sweatshirt I wouldn't want to ever ever grow out of it.  Just last night I bought a couple of XL shirts.  I can wear them but would look better in them after I loose another five or ten pounds.  I was thinking of picking up the the cardigan and shirt/sweatshirt in a large, in hopes I will make it down to that size.  Also hoping that I will still be able to wear them ok if I loose to a size medium.  The pea coat I was thinking of keeping it a XL for next winter.  I like my jackets bigger so I can layer.  What do you think?  Am I crazy to buy ahead in hopes one day I can wear them?  Have any of you vets done this and never made it into the clothes?  Thanks

I have bought many things hoping to wear them but then by time I think to wear them they are huge. I bought a coat last winter on sale for this winter it was a size XL and Now i wear a size S or M depending on the cut. Good thing the main store I shop at has a great return policy. So i wouldnt spend a lot of money on clothing until your at your stable weight.

I bought new clothes that could last for awhile, occasionally I got things I just had to have but it makes no sense.  I started at a 26/28 and now wear a 4/6, I never dreampt I could get this small.  Don't spend a lot as you go down sizes, but enjoy yourself.

Last winter, I had no choice...I had to buy a coat.  I got a size XL.   I'm now wearing Small or Mediums in just about everything...but I still wear the XL coat and its fine.  My closet has a great deal of variety from the loss and honestly, I still wear a good deal.  I have shirts that are in my regular rotation that range from XS to XL.  Shirts, sweaters, even most jackets are fine a little bigger.  Pants, on the other hand, are a no-go if too big.  I can only wear 4s and 6s...none of the ones I bought on the way down fit other than those.  I'm fine with that.   So if that helps, focus on the tops and replace pants along the way only to make sure you have something to wear.

My surgery was May 13. Two weeks later I went to an AWESOME sale of clothing that was from a close-out place and I bought about 75 items in various sizes from 20 to 14. I wore a 24 at the time. Came home and put them in my closet grouped by size and each Friday I had 'fashion show' and would try items on and things I could not even pull on at one point, then got over my hips and then all the way on and then VOILA--one day, they fit! I started shopping for deals very regularly. I will admit that I have over 300 hangers with clothes hanging on them in my closets and about 3/4 of that fits right now. I do have a number of items in my next size down.

A few of the items I ended up not caring for once they did fit, but the majority, I LOVED and enjoyed and when I slimmed out of them, then I consigned them, gave them away to individuals or donated them to Dress for Success.

Having items in my closet that looked like children's clothing (size wise) to me and then fitting into them was FABULOUS!!!  I now wear a 12 for the most part, but have some 10s I can fit in, but have more 10s in reserve that are a bit differently cut than 10s I am comfortable in. But I have not bought a single 8. I am 5' 10" and wear a size 13 shoe. Even in 23 lbs (my goal) I cannot see me hitting 8s with enough regularity to buy any. And I think a fitted 10 is where I will end up.

But having those clothes ready to go when I got to a size was VERY exciting and encouraging to me!! I am really going to miss doing 'fashion show' when I hit my goal weight. It's such a fun hour on Friday nights for my husband and I! My 18 year old stepped in for his dad one week when my husband was out of town and by the third outfit, he was really enjoying it, too! :)

Oh, and an XL to a M is pretty big. I don't know what you are wanting to layer under it, but I SWIM in an XL, I cannot imagine being in a Medium and wanting an XL coat. That is one item I would NOT buy ahead on!

Save your money honey!  Shop at the second hand store for a while!  You'd be surprised what treasures you'll find at Goodwill.  I say that because you'll be pretty upset that you spent money on clothes that going to become waaay to big in a few months.  ALSO - your style changes as you lose weight.  At least mine did.

Thank you all for the replies.  I'm still not sure what to do, but that is ok.  I guess I will think on it.  Moonandstarzz, you asked what I was looking at so here it is...

my absolute favorite

something to keep the cold out but not be overly warm

I am really laughing too, as I showed my daughter what I was looking at and she said mom, make sure you get this in this size, and this in that size so I can wear them too.  I never thought we would ever be able to wear the same size clothing.  She is a size large, so I am coming so close.  In fact at Christmas I bought a few things for her that I really loved and was secretly hoping she would hate.  I told her if she didn't like them I would buy them back.  No such luck.

My goal size will put me in an 8 or 6 (I've been there before so I know this). I bought a size 8 pair of Levi's and an ADORABLE "cold shoulder" top in a medium (I'm big busted even when skinny). They are hanging on my WALL (thumbtacks) and I look at them every morning and night - they are my inspiration clothes! But other than those two, I just use a belt on most of my pants for now, although shortly I'll need to head to some thrift stores for smaller jeans! Yay!
