How much is safe to drink at once?

It was for some contest a radio station was having.  It's called water intoxication.  It's rare but it can happen.

Hi!  I am scheduled for my RNY on 2/4/14 and my "book" that they gave me to review and help me through the process says to keep water by you at all times and "sip" all day long.  Your pouch is only 1/4 to 1/3 of a cup... keep a measuring cup that size next to you and visually think of how much you are swallowing at one time.  Wait 15 minutes or so and drink that much again... since the book says that 15 minutes is how long it takes to process the water on an empty stomach.  I hope this helps - but do not drink more than the 1/4 cup at one time without taking a few minutes for it to go out of the pouch and into the intestines or you probably will stretch it!

I'm sorry bu****er staying in the pouch (for 1 minute, let alone 15!) is a physical impossibility - I'm not sure who wrote that, but if it's a medical professional, that is VERY SCARY!

Sorry, Sin Kim.... I'm new here and was excited to get on here and read what others may be saying since I'm waiting for my RNY and haven't had it yet.  Now I know I will not be posting here.  Thanks for the "support".

Really, that's all it takes for you to give up?

Don't be so thin-skinned. Just because you don't like the advice, it doesn't mean it isn't valuable.

Do some research on your own. You'll quickly learn that a lot of the recommendations you get from doctors and nutritionists have no scientific validity. If you are going to be successful for as long as some people here have been, you need to figure out a lot of things yourself. And one of the most important things to learn is who to pay attention to, and who you should not.

What are you talking about??   Am I in some parallel universe on this board lately?   Support is about telling the truth.   If you post something that is not true, do you just expect people to ignore it so you feel "supported"?

You said:

and this is SO not true!  Your pouch, when you get it, will have a hole at the top and a hole at the bottom, like a tube.   If you pour liquid into it, the liquid will just pass straight through the hole at the other end - there is nothing there to stop it - hence my comment that what you typed is a physical impossibility!   Drinking water will also not stretch your pouch because ...  it passes straight through!

Now, if you find this unsupportive, what can I say?   If you find this reasoning to be enough to stop you posting here, I can't help you with that either.    I wish you luck with your surgery and I hope you are able to find the "support" you need - wherever that may be!

Feel free to drink water as long as it feels comfortable.  It won't stretch your pouch and you need those fluids. Continue to measure food. I also have what feels like a generous pouch, so measuring is really important to keep up.  I'm not one of the incredibly knowledgeable veterans on this site, but I know there's also something about not being able to feel full that soon after surgery because of nerves that were cut.  You'll begin feeling more constriction in time.

Good luck on your journey! Congrats on a good start!!

I am two weeks post op and was just given the go ahead to eat puréed foods. I stayed on a liquid diet for two weeks sipping one to two ounces every fifteen minutes until I got my protein and liquids in. I can't imagine eating food this soon. Do you not experience pain or clumping?

I started pureed foods one week post op and didn't experience any pain.  Did you mean to say dumping?  If you meant clumping, I don't understand what you mean.  But you shouldn't experience dumping because you shouldn't be eating anything with anywhere near enough sugar to cause dumping on pureed foods.  Don't go pureeing any cupcakes or twinkies.  Otherwise, unless you mistakenly get pudding with real sugar instead of sugar free pudding or something like that, you shouldn't experience any dumping.

Clumping is discomfort from the waste up including gas, bloating, burping, up to nausea. Glad you're not experiencing that. Best of luck.
