How much is safe to drink at once?

I was actually put on water restriction at one point in my pregnancy because I was drinking SO MUCH of it all day long. It was awful and it was diluting my water soluble vitamins and leaving me feeling awful, but I just COULD NOT STOP with the drinking.

Water (any clear liquid as I understand it) is NOT going to stretch your pouch. Try pouring water into a balloon with the top and bottom open and see how much water it takes to expand that balloon...which is FAR easier to expand that your pouch.  You just are not going to be able to do it. The water goes right through.

When I get back from a run I am chugging 24 oz of water in a pretty short period of time (less than 15-20 minutes) and have no issues at all and have been advised by my surgeon that it is not an issue to do that. If your surgeon has rules due to your being so newly post-op, of course, always follow those. But unless he/she have put restrictions on and as Kelly said you are not drinking 4 gallons in an hour...then go for it! :)

Please consult your surgeon & nutritionist for how to do it their way.  Biggest regret? Not doing this 10 years ago! Every day is better than the day before...and it was a pretty great day!

Sometimes people with kidney disorders or other health problems also have to really limit fluid intake.  I remember when I used to work in a nursing home, one of the residents was on fluid restriction (I don't recall exactly why) and we had a strict schedule of how many ounces he was to be given and when.  I felt really bad for him because he was always thirsty.  He would also sneak into the bathroom and drink out of the sink faucet if staff wasn't paying attention.

As long as you don't drink to the point of discomfort, then you're going to be fine.

From the day I came home from surgery, I was drinking continuously throughout the day...I still am and I have had NO problems.

What others have told you is true...you no longer have a pyloric valve at the bottom of your pouch, therefore, your pouch is essentially a funnel about the size of your index finger.

If you were to watch an Upper GI and/or Barium Swallow Study, you would see the liquid pass into your esophagus, briefly fill your new pouch, then quickly drain out into intestines. You would only see it slow down or stop if you had a stricture or an obstruction.

I know it feels "wrong" to be able to drink and eat without pain, discomfort, or some other horrible description, because of what so many people post, but you should not be experiencing any of those descriptors. Unfortunately, many people post about the problems they are having and far less post about having NO problems because, well, they aren't having any problems.

I think you're doing great. Measure and weigh your food, follow your surgeon's guidelines, but try not to be worried that you are doing great with liquids.

I am also new to this and have many, many questions that probably seem silly to people who successfully had surgery many years ago.  I've appreciated the good advice and comments that I have received here, as well as the patience shown by those who have seen the same questions posed hundreds of times.  I hope you stay and accept the wealth of information you can receive from this forum.
