What's on the menu today, RNY-ers?
I hope that if you are in the US and went to a SuperBowl party (like I did), you managed to bring or find RNY-friendly foods. I brought my first foray into turkey chili and also had a bite of goat cheese. There were other options I could have had (other cheese, shrimp, guacamole, and many others I couldn't like chicken wings and chips) but I feel good about my choices and my quantity! I have to admit, I was a little envious seeing everyone have plate after plate of delicioius apps, but I am more envious of how slim and active they are, so I forge ahead :)
Anyway, didn't post all weekend about menus because frankly, my menu was really boring. I had leftover chicken breast from two meals on Friday and so I just ate chicken all weekend. Seriously. It was that exciting.
What's on your menu today? I love seeing what you're eating.
Time Since Surgery: 7 weeks today!
Breakfast: EAS AdvantEDGE Carb Control Shake 100 calories and 17 g of protein
Lunch: Turkey Chili (I calculated and 3 oz is 250 calories, 5 g of fat, 21 g of carbs, and 28 g of protein). This is more carbs than I strive to have in a day, so once this batch is gone, turkey chili is gonna have to be a once a year treat. Unfortunately this batch has quite a few servings left. It is DELICIOUS however.
Dinner: I will have some Boar's Head deli turkey (3 oz has 90 calories and 20 g of protein!) with a slice of cheese
That will get me to a daily total of 550 calories, 18 g of fat, 24 g of carbs, and 72 g of protein
Exercise: I am going to Zumba, unless it gets canceled because we may have 1/4 inch of snow and in DC that's reason to shut down schools and government :( I may need a small snack after Zumba since it's a very high impact class, but TBD.
Vitamins: Not yet, but will do it
I pasted my turkey chili recipe below, because when people mention something they have that is delicious, I always wonder what the recipe is :)
Turkey chili Two small cans tomato paste One can tomato sauce Five cloves of garlic One jalapeño One onion One red pepper One green pepper 16-20 oz chicken broth Red hot pepper flakes Salt and pepper Two 20oz packages of 99% fat free turkey Three packets of chili seasoning Sauté all veggies in pam. Add to crock pot. While browning the turkey in a pan (no pam or oil), add the 3 cans of tomato paste and sauce as well as the water to the crock pot. Stir in 3 packets of chili seasoning. Add turkey to crock pot once it's cooked. Put lid on and simmer on low for a few hours :)
Breakfast - ribeye
Lunch - ham and cheese sandwich
Dinner - baked ham
Snack - chicken sandwich
Snack - 1 or two quest bars, depending on calorie total from the rest of the day
If anyone needs the recipe for any of the above, I would be glad to provide it.

Grim Traveller - I have to say, your weight loss is insanely impressive! I see you around the forums and every time I see your ticker, I am blown away. You are obviously super committed and I like seeing what you are eating for meals. Do you limit your carbs now that you are in maintenance? For example, what bread do you use for your ham and cheese sandwich? Thanks! Emily
I use the Sara Lee 45 calorie whole wheat thins. Bread is something that still fills me up really quick, and I can never eat bread or a roll out somewhere. But these are thin enough that, with meat and/or cheese, it goes down fine. And I never had a piece of bread until I reached my lowest weight. I haven't had things like pizza or pasta since before surgery either. Not that I think those things are evil, but they are no good for me.
RNY diet was really perfect for me in many ways. Protein first? Absofrikkenlutely! I was a meat eater before surgery, but indulged in way too many carbs and potatoes, especially, that it killed me. Mine is far from an ideal diet, but it has gotten me much healthier than before, and it is something I can live with long term. That's maybe the most important thing.

I'm with you - I am not planning to have bread until I reach maintenance, and pasta and pizza are both VERRRRY slippery slopes for me! I can't do pasta in moderation. I also like meat and I have found some ways to have crunch in my diet too, over these last seven weeks. Dill pickles, cheese crisps (no carb), and the like. I may one day try a cauliflower crust for a pizza. Or, I just found turkey pepperoni and I bet if I put a tiny bit of sauce and some mozzarella cheese, it would have a savory pizza taste. Do you incorporate veggies into your diet or mostly stick to the protein? Sorry for all of the questions but you have done what is impossible for so many - make a lifestyle change and lose a ton of weight - so I guess I am hoping you won't mind me picking your brain :) Em
Early on I got turkey bacon, trying to eat healthier. The smell of it cooking was literally making me ill, and I tossed it before it was even finished. Yuck. I seldom cook bacon, just because it's a pain, and messy, but when I do I just eat the real stuff. My SIL makes cauliflower faux-tatoes that are awful. It's easier for me to just skip potatoes or bacon entirely than have an unsavory substitute.

My pouch is being combative today, so I'll probably take it easy the rest of the day.
Five and a half months out of surgery.
Breakfast: coffee and cookies and creme nectar protien shake.
snack: string cheese
lunch: boyfriend made some spicy flounder...I had a couple of bites.
going to take yogurt to rehearsal tonight to eat for dinner, and will probably have another protien shake when I get home.
exercise: I have walked around my block, 1.2 miles. That's all for me today.
on track with fluids and vitamins.
I loooooove chili, and that turkey chili sounds amazing!
A combative pouch, huh? That does not sound like fun. I swear, other than excessive talking, my pouch tolerates any and all things. Granted, I have not tried anything sweet or high carb (and don't plan to) but I just wish I had a picky, tiny pouch lol. How is the cookies and creme Nectar protein shake? It sounds amazing. The turkey chili did come out well. Very savory. BTW have I mentioned that your weight loss is one for the medical books? Your doctor must be so proud of you! As we all are :)
I hope the pouch stops having such a 'tude and you enjoy the rest of your day!
My husband and I made a big pot of chili for our neighbors Super Bowl party. I had a bowl of that, and a couple tortilla chips and buffalo chicken dip.
Breakfast: 1 egg Scrambled with cheese and 1 slice turkey bacon
coffee with 2 tbsp almond joy creamer
Snack: Protein Shake (30g)
Lunch: 1 cup Chili w/ 4 tbsp cheese and 3 tbsp light sour cream
Snack: not sure yet, probably none since I'm eating lunch late
Dinner: Pork Chops w/ Sauerkraut and roasted green beans with lemon
I ran a 5k this morning, and I'll be 11 months out on the 13th
I love how you casually "ran a 5k this morning"! ;) I am getting a lot of walking in but still far from running. Sounds like you packed in a lot of protein today! It's so nice to see someone almost a year out who has some veggies and things incorporated into their diet. I bake mine in my egg bites but my food amounts are so small that my meat is usually the only thing I have. I am so excited to have brussels sprouts. I have a follow-up appt with my NUT next week so I will check in with her on my daily diet and see what needs adjusting.
