I am 11 months post-op as of 2/5. Anyway since surgery in March i have a trend. One week i may lose anywhere from .5 lbs to 5 lbs a week. Some weeks i lose nothing which i know is normal. I recently just got rid of an ulcer i had but still have some gastritis. Anyway, after i lose this weight the next day or a few days later i gain about 2-3 lbs. Over the next 2 weeks i slowly keep gaining from day to day, then 1 day i might lose 2 lbs and the next day i will either keep losing until i get down to my lowest weight or i will gain a little bit more. Well over the last 2 weeks again i am slowly gaining... my lowest weight was 210 and yesterday evening i was around 214 so my weight had gone down from the night before when it was 217. This morning i was at 214 and now i am 219. I gained 9lbs in water weight i mean really? I will be discussing this with my surgeon because it's an ongoing issue. Maybe i need diuretics or something?? I am so frustrated with it already i lose weight only to gain weight and it takes a few weeks to lose the weight i gained! I am down only 87 lbs since surgery 11 months ago. I am at 210 and am so close to one-der-land and feel like i will never get there nevermind goal. I am really not eating much salt if anything my blood pressure is on the low side.. average day is 106/68.. so i highly doubt salt is the issue.

As far as meds, i am on thyroid meds, biotin, i take daily milk of mag 4 tbsp so i have been having a bowel movement daily, i also take percocet, ambien, wellbutrin, colace, gas X, antacid, Zofran, dry vitamin D, Calcium chews 2 a day, and my multi vitamins., i can't figure out what is causing so much water retention and was hoping someone could help me figure this out. On a daily basis i try to drink at least 48oz of fluid usually more. I just got over a bowel obstruction but i've been going daily now but it's all water but has fecal color and the milk of mag has been taking care of that so i don't think this is constipation either. I feel like throwing in the towel why can't i lose weight like every other normal RNY patient why must i continously gain every week? Is there some sort of detox diet i can go back to? Im about to just live on protein bars and shakes and go from there because obviously i cannot eat anything without gaining 9lbs in fluids. Has anyone experienced this? Can anyone help me? I am doing everything i am supposed to i am not overeating, or eating high sodium foods,. i mean every few days i might have a salad with salad dressing.. and a few times this week i had a frozen weigh****chers meal.. otherwise i have cottage cheese, chick peas, quest protein bars, pure protein canned protein drinks, oatmeal, cereal like cheerios, i will have fiber one bars, cheese sticks, laughing cow cheese wedges, also had some lunch meat this past week a lunchmeat rollup with no bread. Other things i eat are:
-milk-carrots
-chicken sausage
-cereal
-ketchup
-steamfresh veggies with spray butter and shredded cheese
-mustard
-chicken thighs skinless
-protein bars
-protein shakes
-cheese sticks
-oatmeal
-bananas
-fat free croutons
-light mayo
-dannon light and fit greek with fruit
-peanut butter crackers (sometimes not often)

Anything here that can cause a 9lb gain i meant honestly>> i eat a lot of the same stuff daily. Could this be something more serious with me retaining fluids all of the time? I've had several EKGS and bloodwork the last few months and they are all normal. The only thing abnormal about my 3 months ago, was my TSH my thyroid i was supposed to have it rechecked 6 weeks after they raised my dose and i haven't yet. I will be going to my gyn tomorrow and i will ask him to order it for me and i will have it rechecked last time it was checked my level was too high. I haven't heard an abnormal thyroid causing so much water retention though??

I don't have any advice, but I been up and down with the same five pounds for the last month and a half.  I keep telling myself to just keep doing what I'm supposed to and this too shall pass.  Interested to see what the others say.  Good luck!

I say cut out the cereal, crackers, and croutons. Eat protein first, then vegetables and beans and dairy.

If you're not currently logging your food and liquid intake, maybe try this. I use myfitnesspal and it is great. I also weigh and measure everything just to be sure I know how much I am eating. If I eyeball my food, I usually think it is about 1-2 oz less than what it really is, so weighing and measuring is key. Also, stay off the scale and try to weigh yourself only 1/week. This may help with the hysteria and frustration of fluctuation. Best of luck to you.

I would up your water intake if possible.

Stay off the scale.

Exercise.

Count your calories. We just a month apart and I am supposed to be at 1000-1200 calories depending on activity level. You can graze your way to too many calories even it is the "good" stuff.  I eat plenty of carbs, but I track my calories and I exercise.  I agree that myfitnesspal is very eye-opening!!

Are you getting enough calcium? Just a side note - 2 chews a day probably is not enough. Are you getting your B12 also?

I take bariatric fusion vitamins in addition to the two calcium chews. My labs have been perfect so far but i have my 12 month labs in March. I have had a myfitnesspal account for a long time now i just haven't been logging because i knew there was no way i was even eating close to the allotted calories so i found no need to track. It's mostly the water retention i am worried about. Every so often i do log though so maybe i will log over the next few days and see what is going on here. I also want to get one of those tests where they tell you body composition where you breath into something and it will show how many daily calories i need and what i burn at rest, with exercise, etc. I think that would help a lot because in a huge way i think i am under eating. I might be getting 800-1000 most days but that is a guess. could be a little less or could be a little more. I am trying to increase my water too but it's not easy.. on a good day with water i get the full 64 oz in and on a bad day maybe 24 oz.

You need to keep a food log, and weigh and record everything you eat. You need to know exactly how many calories you are wating, so you can adjust accordingly.

Not long ago, you were eating several ice cream bars every day, and several protein bars, in addition to other things. You are probably just simply eating too much. Unless you are keeping very detailed logs, you won't know for sure. And if you keep better records, your medical team can better help you.

Thanks! Makes since and i have definitely cut down since then. I will probably go back to basics like maybe just protein shakes, water, and protein bars for the next few days to see if i can at least get off the weight gain... something is causing it. Back to basics i think is all i can do to know for sure then start over again. I am glad people remember my posts makes me feel important lol.

Back to basics is NOT back to protein drinks and protein bars - it's back to EATING good wholesome food and dropping the extras ...   You are considering entering a deprivation/binge/deprivation cycle that is neither good physically nor psychologically.

From looking at your food list and your replies here, I think you need to see a good registered dietician ...  you really should have your lifestyle down pat by now and it doesn't look as if you have!

You should NOT be gaining weight at 11 months - something is wrong and you need to fix it NOW before that lb or two becomes 20lbs or 30lbs or worse ...

What about the icecream and Fiberone bars you were having issues with recently?  Could that be contributing?
