I have tried Oh Yeah protein drinks and I can no longer tolerate them.  I have not been getting enough daily protein without the shakes.  Is there such a thing as a good homemade shake.  If there is, please share a basic, good recipe - including brands where applicable.  I am getting desparate.  thanks!

It's all personal preference.  While we can tell you what we like you must ultimately try things out yourself to determine what you like.

You haven't indicated how long ago you had surgery.  If it's been a while, most of us find it pretty easy to get enough protein through food.  Is that an option?

Get some samples.  You can get tons of samples at vitalady.com.  Also you can get samples from unjury.com and chikenutrition.com.

Try mixing the protein powder with different things, like milk, soy milk or almond milk.

Do you like coffee flavored stuff?  A spoonful of decaf instant coffee crystals can make a chocolate or vanilla shake really yummy.

Here's one of my favorite recipes.  It's a root beer float protein shake.  I like to make it with Syntrax Nectar vanilla bean torte protein powder because I think it tastes just like vanilla ice cream.  You can get a sample of it from vitalady.com.  So anway, I mix the protein powder with about five ounces of skim milk or 2% milk in a cup with a lid and shake it up well.  Then I add about five ounces of diet root beer and stir it gently with a spoon.  It's super yummy.

Thank you so much for posting this! I've spent WEEKS looking for it, no lie!! Yay!

Buy the book "The Bariatric Foodie Guide to the Perfect Protein Shake" on amazon.  It's amazing.  I can make amazing shakes because of these recipes.  Add PB2 (powdered peanut butter) to your shakes.  Use sugar free Torani syrups.  Use unsweetened almond milk as a base (low carb and has some protein).  Use chocolate protein powder with Da Vinci sugar free mint syrup and skim or almond milk for a thin mint type of shake.  Don't ever drink a bad shake!  There are options :)

I second the book recommendation.

Here is my current favorite.  I don't know if you are allowed fruit...

1/2 cup plain greek yogurt

1 cup water (or more, depending on what you are looking for in terms of thickness, I actually like this one thin like milk so I add more)

1 scoop vanila protein powder (I buy the cheap stuff from Walmart, it has dorky pictures of body builders all over it, I bet the kind Poet Kelly recommended is better, I keep meaning to order some )

1/2 cup (or more or less) frozen mangos (you could also use strawberries, I think they have a lower glycemic index.

I blend it all up and yummy!  Lately I have been making extra in the am, then I bring it to work in a mason jar and have it for snack too.  it is really creamy and frothy and tastes like a treat.  I have also made it with milk instead of yogurt.  All good!

I definitely think some brands of vanilla protein powder are better than others.  However, if you're mixing it with other stuff, sometimes the other stuff kind of covers up the vanilla taste a bit and it doesn't matter as much.  Like, if I make a coffee shake with vanilla protein powder and instant coffee, I can use any old brand of vanilla because all I end up tasting is the coffee flavor.  But if you want a plain old vanilla shake, or you're adding stuff that still really lets you taste the vanilla flavor, I do really recommend the Syntrax Nectar vanilla bean torte.  To me, when you mix it with milk, it tastes exactly like vanilla ice cream.  Like melted vanilla ice cream.  And a good brand of vanilla ice cream, at that.  Like Breyers or something.
