What's on the menu today, RNYers?

Hi. I noticed you are a patient of Dr. N's, and what with a previous topic about the 600 lb. show, am now curious. Does he provide more information concerning cooking, making, eating foods than shown on the show? He states on the show 'eat more protein', but you never see any guidance given on what is good proteins, not eating processed foods, using protein shakes if necessary...etc. May just be the way it's edited, but always wondered. Does he talk about the honeymoon period to encourage people to lose the most they can? The show gives me the impression that not a lot of nutritional information is passed on as most these people seem to go back to their old habits pretty quickly in the beginning. I notice so many do not actually cook real meals and everyone eats fast food and processed stuff...... Can you tell us about it? He seems like such a compassionate person.....
Hello this is what I wrote on that post.
I have watched this show a time or two in the past. So not too much experience with it. However I did have wls with Dr. N. It was either going to be him or Dr. Felix Spiegal. I preferred Dr. N and I am so glad I did. He has great bedside manner but he is far from a push over. He did make me have two psych evals 6 visits with a nutritionist and 6 months of pre op care with him. He does tell us exactly what we should be eating as well as provides many recipes and example day meal plans. The only thing I didn't like was he doesn't like us to use protein shakes to get our protein. He wants us to get it from fish and chicken and other foods. I can barely eat much food. Iserve me 2 oz at each meal and rarely can finish that. I am only 5 months out and I like it this way. I still drink Shakeology with isopure protein or else I wouldn't be able to meet my goal. All and all my point is that Dr. N is a very thorough Dr. When I was inpatient he would visit at least once daily. He came and discharged me himself to deliver follow up care. If I call his office I can get him on the phone and I can always get same day appointments. If he isn't available he always returns my call. Those shows only show the entertainment and are a little deceptive...
P.S. I will add no one is responsible for what we eat after surgery but ourselves. No one is to blame if we sabotage this tool we have been blessed with with. Yes it is our doctor responsibility to provide us with the medical aspect and help prepare us what to expect. But ultimately the responsibility to inform ourselves and be proactive in our health lies with us. We can choose to eat the right foods in the right about or eat the way we did before our surgery and stay in the same situation.

Hello. That makes a lot more sense than what is portrayed on the show. He seems like a very caring person and it didn`t seem possible that he would not give clearer instructions, recipes, etc. to help people get to their goals. So this show portrays the worst offenders for a more dramatic show by the looks of it. I too love my protein shakes and still drink one a day and I am four years out. I find they top me up and stop me from wanting to graze on something else, and with 25 g protein and 100 cals, can`t go wrong!
I still read several websites and try to stay on top of things because I think that if I don`t keep reading and reminding myself, it will be too easy to gain weight back.
Thanks for that info. I suppose I read it on the 600 lbs. postings but didn`t realize you were the same person; never noticed the names. Thanks!
B- 2 egg whites, sprinkle of cheddar cheese, salsa, Refried beans
L- 2oz smoked turkey breast, 1oz pepper jack cheese
D- went to Texas Roadhouse for the first time since surgery, no peanuts or rolls for me... 2 oz grilled pork chop, just the tomatoes off my salad (daughter ate the rest), couple of bites of green beans, couple of bites of baked potato
I really enjoyed eating out. Didn't even blink about all the food I didn't get to eat. It is what it is.
I agree about the calcium. I was nervous about the petites but they went down ok. I have looked all over town for something better. I'm not getting all my calcium in and I need to fix it soon.
I end up eating out quite a bit and I see it as a fun challenge. I mean, it's like "how many meals can I get for $20!" Lol. My turkey burger last night is stretched to 3 meals, some restaurant meals turn into four meals :) then I can rationalize spending money elsewhere hahaha! That's awesome that you didn't bat an eye!
DC Girl - thank you for posting this each day. I am 74 days from surgery, and I look for this post daily to help me get ideas about what I will be eating :) It seems so strange and foreign to me right now, but I'm sure I will adjust. Right now I am on 1800 cal/day diet, but I have been keeping it around 1000. I'm also trying to really watch my protein and carb intake and be conscious of it in making my decisions about what to eat. My husband is also dieting with me and is having surgery a month after I do! We were invited out for a birthday dinner at a friends house tonight and I was really nervous about going, but it ended up going pretty well. I had grilled chicken, steamed broccoli and 1/2 of a baked potato. The hardest part for me was saying no to the dinner rolls (bread is my Achilles heel) but I passed on them and felt so good afterward for doing so!
Thank you all for sharing - it really helps us newbies
Wow!! Good for you sticking to 1000ish calories before surgery. It's so much easier after surgery (though it still requires effort) but I advocate you lose as much as you can pre-op which will make your surgery go well, your recovery go well, etc. you're so close! How exciting to be able to do this with your husband. You'll be gassy together ;) So glad this is helpful for you!!

Well, good or bad, after four years, I still cannot tolerate much in the way of bread. It feels like sandpaper going down, so I just avoid it. I do find I can have toast occasionally though. But even that I might only eat once a week. Figure I don't need the carbs etc. in the 'bad white stuff' like flour, rice, potatoes, pasta anyways and stick to proteins and veggies. Very little fruit because of the sugar. Went out last night and for dinner has an appetizer of Asian lettuce wraps and took half home. Only had 3 ribs of lettuce with the ground chicken mixture. Have enough for 3 more ribs at least. So it's not that hard to avoid the white stuff. If I am out I ask for a meal with no bread, no fries, etc. ahead of time so that I don't have it on the plate to nibble on. A bunless burger is just fine and still can only eat about half of it!!
